THE MOST EPIC HIKE IN ICELAND 🇮🇸🤩 Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, located in the Westfjords is super remote, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful. It is truly a hikers paradise. You can only access Hornstrandir by ferry and then by foot. 🥾 Hiking here is only accessible from about June-Aug when the ferry runs. I recommend going in late July if you want to see the wildflowers in peak bloom and have...

Reviews Summary

Hornstrandir is lauded as a pristine, untouched wilderness offering breathtaking natural beauty and unique wildlife encounters, particularly with Arctic foxes. While the remoteness and challenging terrain are part of its allure, visitors should be prepared for limited amenities and unpredictable weather. The cost and effort to reach it are significant, but most agree the experience is unforgettable.

"This place is absolutely a gem of nature. Came here on a backpacking trip and its remoteness ensures some breathtakingly beautiful views of nature away from human influence. The land is a haven for any outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore some of the wildest and most pristine landscapes in Iceland. Please care for the delicate ecosystem there though!

In terms of wildlife, I primarily encountered arctic foxes, seals, seabirds, and a lot of bugs (though I never got bitten by anything). The trails range from level ground along the coastline to challenging hikes up steep mountain paths. Be sure to know where you are setting camp, as there are designated areas, and the only amenities are the occasional outhouse. The only time I had service there was at the peak area of The Horn. In August, there were still some remaining snow patches, but spikes were not needed. The one thing to be aware of is the windiness in the flats, two of our Nemo tents snapped under the conditions. The very last night we also got a view of the Aurora Borealis, which was absolutely stunning. Words alone cannot describe such nature, if you ever get the chance to visit yourself, it is a must."

"🌿 Hornstrandir Nature Reserve – Untouched Icelandic Wilderness at Its Best

Hornstrandir is pure magic. Remote, wild, and breathtakingly beautiful — it's one of those rare places where nature feels truly untouched. Towering cliffs, sweeping fjords, lush green valleys, and the endless sound of seabirds create an atmosphere that’s both humbling and peaceful.

It’s perfect for hiking, photography, and simply disconnecting from the busy world. We spotted Arctic foxes, seabirds, and experienced some of the most dramatic landscapes Iceland has to offer.

There are no roads or permanent residents, which adds to the feeling of adventure and solitude. Make sure to come prepared and respect the fragile ecosystem.

If you’re looking for raw, remote beauty — Hornstrandir is unforgettable."

"In this remote area of Iceland, if you like untouched nature, you must take a boat and visit Hesteyri in Jökulfjörður. The village was abandoned by its few dozens of remaining inhabitants on the 1950’s. It’s a place out of this world: no cell phone nor internet signal over there!"

Wildlife of Hornstrandir

Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is a sanctuary for a variety of wildlife, with the Arctic fox being its most famous resident. These resilient creatures are often seen roaming freely, and their lack of fear towards humans is a unique aspect of the reserve. Visitors have reported seeing fox pups playing, especially during the summer months. Instagram It's crucial to maintain a respectful distance and avoid feeding them to preserve their natural behavior.

Beyond foxes, the skies and waters around Hornstrandir teem with life. Seabirds nest on the dramatic cliffs, creating a constant symphony of calls. You might also spot seals basking on the shorelines or swimming in the fjords. While less common, other marine mammals can occasionally be seen offshore. Remember that this is a wild environment, and sightings are never guaranteed, but the abundance of life is a testament to the reserve's pristine condition. Reddit

While the wildlife is a major draw, be aware of the smaller inhabitants. Insects are present, though bites are generally not an issue. The key is to appreciate all forms of life and understand that you are a visitor in their home. The presence of these animals is a direct result of the reserve's protected status and the minimal human impact. Reddit

Hiking and Trekking in Hornstrandir

Hornstrandir is a hiker's paradise, offering a truly immersive wilderness experience. The trails range from relatively flat coastal walks to challenging ascents up steep mountain paths. Popular routes include treks to abandoned villages like Hesteyri and along the dramatic coastline. Instagram+1 Backpacking is a common way to experience the reserve, allowing for deeper exploration and overnight stays in designated camping areas. Reddit

When planning your hikes, preparation is paramount. The weather can be highly unpredictable, with rapid changes from sunshine to rain and strong winds. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential, as are layers of clothing, including waterproof and windproof outer shells. Navigation is also critical; cell service is virtually non-existent, so carrying a map, compass, or GPS device is a must. Reddit Some areas may retain snow patches even into late summer, so be prepared for varied conditions. Reddit

For those considering multi-day treks, such as the six-day backpacking trip mentioned by some travelers, it's worth considering whether a guided tour is suitable. While many prefer solo hiking, guided trips can offer valuable insights into the local flora, fauna, and history, as well as logistical support. Reddit Regardless of your approach, always inform someone of your itinerary and expected return time. The remoteness of Hornstrandir means self-sufficiency is key.

The Unique Charm of Abandoned Villages

Hornstrandir is dotted with remnants of past human habitation, most notably the abandoned village of Hesteyri. Once a small fishing and whaling station, Hesteyri was gradually deserted, with its last inhabitants leaving in the 1950s. Reddit Visiting Hesteyri offers a poignant glimpse into a bygone era, where the silence is broken only by the sounds of nature. The preserved buildings stand as a testament to the hardy lives once lived in this isolated corner of Iceland. Reddit

Exploring these ghost villages is a unique experience that adds a layer of historical depth to the natural beauty of Hornstrandir. It’s a chance to reflect on the resilience of communities that thrived in such a remote environment. The lack of modern infrastructure, including cell phone and internet signals, further enhances the feeling of stepping back in time. Reddit

While Hesteyri is the most well-known, other smaller settlements and isolated farmsteads can be found throughout the reserve. These sites are often marked by stone foundations or the remains of turf houses. When exploring, remember to treat these historical sites with respect, leaving them as you found them for future visitors to discover.
