Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Western Market for its unique Edwardian architecture and the vast selection of fabrics, making it a historic shopping destination. However, many are saddened by the impending renovations and the potential permanent closure of long-standing fabric shops, urging others to visit before it's too late. The atmospheric upper floors are also a notable draw for their photographic potential. InstagramReddit+1

"Western Market was built in 1906 and it is one of the oldest building in the neighbourhood.
It has been turned into shopping complex with small shops and restaurants. The second floor is occupied by fabric merchants.
It was quiet when we visited that late afternoon. Nothing much to see or do. Only the exterior side of the Edwardian-style building and a red telephone booth were impressive."

CS Chai

"It's an old heritage building. You can buy cloth rolls by metre. Has a big banquet hall for wedding celebrations and also has some shops and restaurants. If you are a dessert person you can buy various desserts with different flavors at Honeymoon Dessert Restaurant."

Joaquim D'Silva

"The exterior is nice but nothing too much to do. It looks big from outside but it's very small. On the first floor, they sell cloth and second floor is wedding hall. You will max spend around 10-15 mins only. The best shop of this market is the bus model shop, u can buy postcards as well as Hong Kong bus models."

The History and Future of Western Market

The Western Market is a historic landmark in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, renowned for its distinctive Edwardian-era architecture. Built in 1906, this striking red-brick building has served as a bustling hub for various trades, most notably as a center for fabric and textile merchants. Its unique design and long history make it a significant cultural site. Instagram

However, the market is facing a major transition. It is slated for extensive renovations that will see it closed for approximately two years. This closure has led to uncertainty for many of the long-standing businesses within, particularly the fabric shops that have been a cornerstone of the market for decades. Visitors have described them as having a 'haunted mansion vibe,' offering a distinct and atmospheric setting for exploration and photography. This offers a different perspective beyond the retail spaces, adding another layer to the market's appeal. Reddit
