What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Castle Peak offers a demanding but incredibly rewarding hiking experience with unparalleled panoramic views of Hong Kong. Hikers praise the stunning vistas and the sense of accomplishment after conquering the steep granite trails. However, the strenuous nature of the hike and the lack of amenities are frequently mentioned drawbacks, requiring thorough preparation.
"Challenging hike to castle peak, path is clear and paved, followed the yellow handrail to the top, but steepness is serious one. Not recommended if you are new or want to do first hike. No supply shop along the way.
View from the top is nice, recommend to go on sunny day"

"Overview
- About 6 hour walk including taking photos
- Single hiker not recommended
- Not suitable for hiking during Summer time or temperature over 25°C
Gathering at Siu Hing western railway station at 9 am. We, 8 hikers took 505/615p light rail transit (LRT) at exit B1 and dropped off at Leung King station. Went through Leung King wet market and you would entered into government eststes and playground. Then turn left, you would find the entrance to Castle Peak Range Road(青山軍路). This road also leads you to Leung King Au Valley / Por Lo Shan (良山㘭/波蘿山).
About 30 minute walk, you would find a trail from your left hand side to Castle Peak. You just follow the trail and walk toward the direction of the Castle Peak Communication Tower(青山發射站). It is easy to see and locate the tower as it is very high and tall. That is one of the highest 3 Peaks in Hong Kong.
Before arriving there, you would climb about 4 to 5 mountains. It is challenging as there is no cover under sunshine. Furthermore, it is quite slippage walking uphill on the loose sands. It will be much more dangerous when walking downhill.
At the top of the Castle Peak, you can see a very wide and view of Tun Mun. Even more, you can see the long coastal front and buildings of Shenzhen. It will take you about 4 hours to get there.
Returning from the Peak, you may take about 1.5 hours to the nearest LRT station. It will be much more easy to go downhill on manually created stone steps. On the way back, you may pay a visit to Castle Peak Monatery ( 青山寺). When you see YKK building and Intitute of Vacation Education at the cross road, turn left to take LRT.
Further reminder, bringing enough water with full hiking equipment and going with friends are important."

"Castle Peak is the highest mountain (583m above Sea Level) in Tuen Mun of New Territories West. You can see whole Tuen Mun, Lantau Island, Hong Kong Island and even Shenzhen from the top.
Suggested to taking a taxi to Tsing Shan Monastery (150m above Sea level) to start the hike. There are several places for short breaks and sight seeing along the way to top. Tall trees are also around to shelter sunshine too. It may takes 1 to 1.5 hour to the top. Hiking up requires efforts, but shall be ok with constant slow pace and some short breaks.
Hiking down to Leung King Estate is actually real challenge for the journey. The track condition is very poor, slippery and steep. You may fall down easily, even you have good Hiking shoes plus 2 Hiking poles. You may need to choose good way down by observing first. Also, there are many sub paths on the way. You shall have a offline map with you to avoid getting loss. It takes 2 to 2.5 hours to the estate."

The summit offers the most iconic panoramic shots. However, many points along the trail provide excellent opportunities for capturing the rugged terrain, the winding path, and the distant cityscapes.
Early morning or late afternoon (golden hour) provides the best light for photography, with softer shadows and warmer tones. Midday sun can be harsh and create strong contrasts.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive views. A sturdy tripod can be useful for low-light conditions or long exposures. Ensure your gear is protected from dust and sweat. :camerawithflash:
Look for shots that contrast the natural ruggedness of the mountain with the urban landscape in the distance. The intricate patterns of the granite steps also make for interesting close-up shots.
Capture the effort and the journey! Photos of fellow hikers on the steep sections, the winding trail ahead, or moments of rest with a view can tell a compelling story of the experience.

The Castle Peak Hike: A Challenging Ascent
While challenging, the reward is immense. The trail offers increasingly spectacular views as you gain altitude. You'll witness the urban sprawl of Tuen Mun gradually unfolding below, providing a dramatic contrast to the natural ruggedness of the mountain. The path itself is an interesting feature, with its meticulously laid granite steps forming a visual pattern against the landscape. Be prepared for exposure to the elements, as there is little shade on the upper parts of the trail.
Capturing the Views: Photography at Castle Peak
Beyond the summit, numerous points along the trail offer compelling photographic opportunities. Look for shots that capture the scale of the hike, the intricate patterns of the granite steps, and the juxtaposition of nature and urban development. Wide-angle lenses are ideal for capturing the sweeping panoramas, while a telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details in the distant cityscape or on the horizon. Remember to protect your gear from dust and sweat, and consider bringing a lightweight tripod for sharper images, especially in lower light conditions. The journey itself, with fellow hikers and the challenging ascent, can also be a subject for compelling storytelling photography.
Planning Your Visit: Practicalities and Preparation
Getting to Castle Peak is best done via public transport. Take the MTR to Tuen Mun Station and then a local bus or taxi to the trailhead. Weekdays and early mornings are recommended to avoid the largest crowds and the midday heat. Inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time, especially if you are hiking solo, as mobile phone reception can be unreliable. While dogs are generally permitted on a leash, ensure you are prepared to carry out all waste. The hike is strenuous, so ensure you are physically prepared and have adequate time allocated for the round trip.
