What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking sunset views and the unique charm of the historic stone huts. The hike itself is considered rewarding, offering a great escape into nature. However, some find the trails challenging or overgrown, and weather can sometimes obscure the much-anticipated sunset.

"Sunset peak is famous for its beautiful scenery and the little stone huts on top. Sure you won't be disappointed when you get there.
If you're to plan an expedition to your third tallest mountain in Hong Kong (869 meters), there are 3 major routes you can choose from.
Most do not recommend the Wong Lung Hang route as it's rather steep and there are flights after flights of stone stairs. However, if you think you are moderately fit and can handle those endless stone steps, you may actually consider going up this way for a few reasons.
1. It's shorter. According to the official sign, it takes only 1¾ hours to reach the peak (not the highest point though, but a place where you can enjoy breathtaking view and you won't even care the peak is still some distance, like 30 minutes or so away).
2. When you get to the end of this route, you've basically entered the area with lots of stone houses scattered all over the hill, whereas if you come from the most common Pak Kung Au route, you'll have to reach the peak first and then descend to these beautiful huts.
3. Most of the Wong Lung Hang route is well covered by trees. You won't be roasted by the sun as easily. And when the sun pierces through the leaves from above, it's a very beautiful scene indeed.
Then when you go down, I suggest taking the Pak Kung Au way. Three reasons.
1. You'll have the gorgeous sea view right in front of your eyes for at least half the way while you're descending.
2. The height of the steps is on average shorter than those in the Wong Lung Hang route, making it easier to walk down, especially when the climb before has taken a toll on your legs and your body.
3. Once you get to the end of the trail, the bus stop is right there. A 15- to 20-minute bus ride will take your weary body back to Tung Chung Town Centre or Tung Chung MTR Station.
Have fun!"

"Whether you are going to Phoenix Mountain or Dadongshan, Bogongao is a very important starting point. I climbed to the top of both mountains through this. I prefer Dadongshan. The rocky landscape on the top of the mountain attracts attention. It is definitely the best choice to shoot the sunset. Young people are the main crowd at the top of the mountain. It coincides with Valentine's Day on February 14th. Couples will go together as the home court. They encourage and take care of each other to test the depths of the lover’s mutual feelings, and build deeper in the extreme hard journey. Feelings. Many climbers who like camping choose Dadong Mountain. The gentle terrain on the top of the mountain provides more opportunities to build street-sleeping tents. I admire these camping brave men the most, each carrying a huge bag and carrying food and water. Since you are taking pictures of sunset, you must prepare lighting equipment when you go down the mountain, and be careful during night walks to avoid stepping on stone steps when you are tired."

Navigating the Lantau Trail to Sunset Peak
Many visitors find downloading a dedicated hiking app, such as 'Enjoy Hiking,' to be incredibly beneficial. These apps provide detailed maps, elevation profiles, and real-time location tracking, which can be a lifesaver, especially if you venture onto less-trodden paths. Some Reddit users have noted that reaching the absolute highest point might involve some scrambling or navigating through overgrown areas, suggesting that a good sense of direction and preparedness are key.
When planning your hike, consider the time of day. While a sunrise hike is an option, many prefer to ascend in the late afternoon to witness the spectacular sunset. This timing also allows for cooler temperatures and softer lighting, ideal for photography. Remember to pack essentials like ample water, snacks, sun protection, and insect repellent, as facilities on the trail are scarce.
The Allure of the Stone Huts
These huts evoke a sense of a bygone era and provide a fascinating glimpse into the past lives of those who inhabited this remote area. Their weathered stone walls and simple architecture blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment, making them a photogenic focal point. Many visitors enjoy exploring the huts and imagining the lives of their former occupants.
When visiting the stone huts, remember to be respectful of their historical significance. While they are a popular spot for photos, it's important to maintain their integrity and not disturb the structures. They serve as a poignant reminder of Lantau Island's rich history and its connection to the natural world.
Capturing the Perfect Sunset
To capture the best shots, timing is crucial. Aim to arrive at the summit at least an hour before sunset to set up your gear and find the best vantage points. A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to encompass the vastness of the landscape. A tripod will be invaluable for capturing sharp images in the low light conditions and for long exposures of the sky.
Beyond the sunset itself, the journey to the peak offers numerous photographic opportunities. The stone huts, the winding trails, and the diverse flora and fauna of the country park all contribute to a visually rich experience. Be mindful of the weather, as clouds can enhance or obscure the sunset, adding an element of unpredictability that can lead to unique photographic moments.
