What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the spectacular views of the active Santiaguito volcano, especially the dramatic eruptions and beautiful sunrises. The hike is considered manageable, even for less experienced trekkers, and the mystical ambiance of the viewpoint adds to the experience. While officially closed, access via private land with a small fee is common and well-regarded.
"Amazing hike. Took us about 4 hours going very slowly. We saw the volcano erupt 4 times in 2 hours! The trail is pretty easy to follow and the hike is pretty easy, as far as mountains go. Technically Santiagito Mirador is closed right now, but there were lots of people there. There are some animals on the trail and we encountered a friendly dog who hiked with us. You have to cross 3 fences and pay the farmer 10 quetzales for using his property. We did not actually see any arrows, red, blue, or any other color. But after finishing the steep part of the trail, you get to a field/clearing, and there is an arrow left for Santa Maria summit and an arrow right for santiagito mirador. Climbed October 2025."

"Spectacular view on the active Vulcan Santiaguito. If you want to go alone, without a guide, make sure to have the GPS data and maps, as you will not find it without. I startet 6:30 and took me a bit more than 1h to the viewpoint"

📸 📸 Photography Tips
The early morning, especially during sunrise, offers the most dramatic lighting for photos. Capturing volcanic eruptions requires patience and being ready to shoot.
A camera with good low-light performance is beneficial for sunrise shots. A zoom lens can be useful for capturing details of the volcano's activity from a safe distance.
The main viewpoint offers panoramic views. Experiment with different angles to capture both the landscape and the volcanic activity.
Be prepared for sudden bursts of activity. Using a tripod can help with stability in low light, and a faster shutter speed might be needed to freeze the motion of ash and lava.
Focus on the interplay of light and shadow, and the vastness of the landscape. Wide-angle lenses can help convey the scale of the viewpoint.
