Beat the Crowds & Heat

The Karavolades Stairs can get very busy, especially when cruise ships dock. Opt for early mornings or late afternoons to avoid the midday sun and long queues for the cable car. Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes as the steps can be uneven and slippery, and be prepared for the presence of donkeys.

Cable Car vs. Stairs vs. Donkeys

While the cable car offers a quick ascent to Fira (around 6-10 euros), wait times can be excessive. Walking the 588 steps is a free, albeit strenuous, option with stunning views. Donkey rides are available but can be costly and raise ethical concerns for some travelers.

Reviews Summary

The Karavolades Stairs offer a challenging but rewarding experience with stunning caldera views, a free alternative to the cable car. While the steps can be uneven, slippery, and shared with donkeys, many find the effort worthwhile for the unique Santorini atmosphere and photo opportunities. Be prepared for the heat and wear sturdy shoes.

"We only took the stairs down. We appreciated that this was an option because the wait for the cable cars was 2.5 hours. You can walk down or ride a donkey. I believe it costs $10 euros. I feel bad for the donkeys because they are just standing around in the heat. The steps vary in depth especially at the switchbacks. The steps are made of lots of small to medium stones so can be uneven and some of the stones are slippery so just mind you step. Shoes with good tread are best. Also watch for donkey excrement. You definitely don't want to carry that smell around with you. We are in pretty good shape and it took us about 30 min. That included time for pictures, waiting on slower people and letting donkeys pass."

April Williams

"After a full day touring Santorini by land and sea, we returned to Fira expecting a quick cable car ride back down to the port. In the morning, it had been effortless — walk in, pay, ride down with zero wait. By afternoon, however, the line stretched for what staff said was over two hours in the sun.

Exhausted but not defeated, we decided to take the Karavolades Stairs instead. Finding the entrance was easy enough, and the views were stunning — sweeping vistas of the caldera that truly show why Santorini is so special.

The descent, however, is not for everyone. The steps are steep, uneven, and heavily used by the donkeys that carry riders up and down. Between the twists, droppings, and slick stones, you’ll want sturdy shoes and patience.

We skipped the donkey rides for personal reasons and made the walk ourselves, taking breaks at the scenic lookouts along the way. It was challenging, smelly, and a bit chaotic — but also memorable and uniquely Santorini."

"Wow. Long way up. Recommend being in decent condition or ride the horses for a fee. Great views. There are a few lookout points where you can pretend to enjoy the view of the ocean and surrounding scenery all while really stopping to catch your breath. I highly recommend bringing water and if possible, take this hike early in the morning, before 9:30, so you can avoid the sun. Great weather in early July but the sun is still u forgiving. You can’t also take the cable cars up for 10 euros a person but be prepared to wait."

Travelers often choose this route to avoid the potentially long queues for the cable car, which can stretch for hours during peak season. InstagramReddit

The stairs themselves are a mix of cobblestones and uneven stones, making sturdy footwear a non-negotiable. The path is shared with local donkeys, which are used to transport tourists up and down the steep incline. Despite the physical exertion and the occasional olfactory challenge, the Karavolades Stairs provide unparalleled views of the caldera and the vast Aegean Sea. Choosing Your Ascent: Cable Car, Stairs, or Donkey?

When arriving at the Old Port of Fira, visitors face a decision on how to reach the town above: the cable car, the Karavolades Stairs, or a donkey ride. The cable car offers a swift and comfortable journey, typically costing around 6-10 euros per person. However, it's notorious for its long wait times, especially when multiple cruise ships are in port, sometimes exceeding two hours. InstagramReddit

Walking the Karavolades Stairs is the most budget-friendly and physically demanding option. It's free and provides a fantastic workout with stunning panoramic views. This choice is best suited for those with good fitness levels and a desire to experience Santorini at a slower pace. Remember to wear appropriate footwear and carry water. InstagramReddit

Donkey rides are a traditional way to ascend or descend. While offering a unique experience, they come with a fee (similar to the cable car) and have raised ethical concerns among some travelers regarding the animals' welfare, especially in the heat. InstagramReddit Ultimately, the best choice depends on your priorities: speed and comfort (cable car), budget and fitness (stairs), or a traditional experience (donkey). Instagram
