Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the historical significance of Philippi, especially its connection to St. Paul and early Christianity. The ancient amphitheater's acoustics and the scale of the ruins are frequently highlighted. However, some find the entrance fee and separate museum cost a bit high, and certain areas may be closed for safety.

"I loved visiting here, especially being a Christian and knowing the history of this town. The excavations are only partially done, but you can still get a real feel of what it must have been like. Such a great experience!"

Jim Roberts

"Very fun experience overall. Alot of the places to see were closed off for Saftey, and the museum costs alot - 10 euros each on top of the entrance ticket, despite that, the staff Is very nice, a man gave us a tour around a section of the plot, around a tomb. you get an hour or two of walking around and exploring for ten euros and kids go free. I'd recommend strongly, especially if more things open up"

Marko Markovic Miljkovic

"I loved the amphitheatre and it's amazing acoustics! It's insane to experience the "technology" that they had so many years back. We went on our own, so I think we missed a lot of the information, although there were enough signs explaining what you were looking at. The prison of Paul that we were most excited to see, was not much, but it was nice being at the place that he walked and spoke. The price of 10€/person is a bit too much."

It holds immense significance, particularly for its connection to early Christianity. The city was founded by Philip II of Macedon and later became a Roman colony. Its strategic location and Roman administration made it an important center in the region. Reddit

One of the most compelling aspects of Philippi is its role in the New Testament. It's the site where the Apostle Paul established the first Christian church in Europe. Visitors can explore the prison of St. Paul, where he and Silas were incarcerated after casting out a spirit of divination from a slave girl. This event is a pivotal moment in the spread of Christianity. Reddit

The site also features impressive Byzantine basilicas, showcasing the evolution of Christian architecture and worship. The ancient theater is another highlight, known for its remarkable acoustics, offering a glimpse into the entertainment and public life of the era. The ongoing excavations continue to reveal more about this multifaceted historical location.

Navigating the Site and What to Expect

Exploring the Philippi Archaeological Site involves walking through extensive ruins spread across a large area. Visitors can expect to see remnants of the Roman forum, public baths, a basilica, and the city walls. The amphitheater is a standout feature, remarkably preserved and still used for performances today. Reddit

While many structures are partially excavated, the site offers enough to provide a real feel for its past grandeur. Informative signs are placed throughout the grounds, explaining the significance of different areas. However, some visitors suggest that a guided tour can significantly enhance the understanding and appreciation of the site's history. Reddit
