"Just one of the most beautiful antique theatre in the world, actually maybe Number One. An incredible place, a perfect acoustic creation in the middle of a wild nature.
A definitely don’t miss site of Greece !!"

Francois Boulenger

"Visiting the ancient theatre of Epidaurus was quietly awe-inspiring. Nestled in a serene natural setting, the site exudes a timeless elegance. Its flawless acoustics and graceful design reveal the genius of classical architecture. I had the chance to sit where audiences have for centuries, and enjoyed reflecting while taking in the tranquil atmosphere. As someone who deeply enjoys ancient tragedies, being in such a historic space made the experience even more profound—a beautiful blend of place, history, and emotion."

Anastasios P.

"This ancient theatre is amazing. It's the only or one of the only ancient theatres that is intact apart from a small section that is modern. This arena is still used today, this is testament to the engineers of the past. The acoustics are amazing, I walked right to the top, somebody in the middle of the theatre called out my name and I could hear them. We were having a full blown conversation even though I was right at the top.
I don't know whether this theatre is worth €20 but it is a lovely place to visit 😊"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Marvel of Epidaurus Acoustics

The Epidaurus Ancient Theatre is world-renowned for its exceptional acoustics, a testament to the ingenuity of ancient Greek architects. Built in the 4th century BCE, the theatre's design allows sounds from the stage to travel clearly to the uppermost seats, a distance of over 50 meters. This remarkable feat is achieved through the precise curvature of the seating tiers and the materials used in its construction. Visitors are often astonished that a dropped coin or a whispered word from the stage can be heard distinctly throughout the entire amphitheater. Reddit

This acoustic perfection is not just a historical curiosity; it's a functional element that continues to be celebrated. The theatre still hosts performances today, including ancient Greek dramas and concerts, allowing modern audiences to experience its unparalleled sound quality. Many visitors recount the thrill of standing on the stage and testing the acoustics themselves, a truly memorable part of the Epidaurus experience. Reddit+1

While the exact scientific principles are still debated, the consensus points to a combination of factors: the precise angle of the seating, the reflective properties of the stone, and the overall symmetry of the structure. The theater at Epidaurus serves as a powerful reminder of the advanced understanding of physics and engineering possessed by the ancient Greeks. Reddit

Exploring the Asclepieion of Epidaurus

Beyond the iconic theatre, the Epidaurus Ancient Theatre is part of a larger archaeological site known as the Asclepieion. This was a sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, and was one of the most important healing centers in the ancient world. Visitors can explore the remains of various structures that formed this bustling complex. Reddit

Key areas to discover include the Abaton, where patients would sleep and receive divine healing dreams, the Tholos (circular building), the Stadium, and the Propylaea (gateway). The site offers a glimpse into the religious and medical practices of ancient Greece, providing a broader historical context for the theatre's existence. Reddit

While the theatre often steals the spotlight, dedicating time to the Asclepieion allows for a more comprehensive understanding of Epidaurus's significance. The ruins, though less intact than the theatre, still evoke a sense of history and the ancient pursuit of well-being. Reddit

Attending a Performance at Epidaurus

Experiencing a play or concert at the Epidaurus Ancient Theatre is a bucket-list item for many. The Athens & Epidaurus Festival typically runs during the summer months, featuring a program of classical dramas and contemporary performances. Reddit

Attending a performance offers a unique opportunity to witness the theatre's legendary acoustics in action, just as ancient audiences did.
