Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Museum of Modern Greek Culture Athens for its unique setting within a historic Ottoman mosque and its engaging collection of traditional Greek folk art. While some find it a smaller, more focused experience, it offers a valuable glimpse into the daily lives and crafts of past generations. The proximity to other major attractions is also a significant plus.

"We thought it was a great museum. A lot of cultural heritage, and very ambitious idea - to show a portrait of the modern Greek person with the historical background. I loved the enthusiasm of the people who worked there - it were a lot of buildings to hop in between (very close to each other), and each building had a dedicated employee. The lady who worked at the cashier desk impressed us with the love for the place too. 1 hour is not enough to see the museum, I would recommend at least two! There are special activities for the kids too, which was lovely (I do not have a kid so could not test them, but the activities looked whimsical and cute!). Very well worth the price, especially when you think how many resources and employees are involved."

"Amazing museum showcasing Greek culture, ways of life, entertainment and dress history. It was really interesting seeing all the regional dresses side by side and learning about the daily life of everyday people. Beautiful showcases, and activities included for younger children. You step into a courtyard where each neoclassical house contains an exhibition focused on one aspect of life. This museum is well worth a visit as it shines a light on a more modern period of Greek history that is sometimes overlooked in the midst of the classical, ancient wonders."

"The mosque was built in 1759 by the Ottoman governor of Athens, Mustafa Aga Tzisdarakis, in the heart of the city's market area, next to the fountain that designated the center of the market. The foundational inscription is preserved on the transom of the entrance door, while small niches for outside prayer are found between the large windows.

The restoration of the building was carried out by the architect Anastasios Orlandos in 1915. The building was given over for museum use in 1918 to the newly founded Museum of Greek Handicraft, now the Museum of Modern Greek Culture.

From the exterior, one can only see the remnants of the mosque. Hopefully the building will be reconstructed and preserved so that one day it can be used as a mosque again."
