What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Peters Brauhaus is celebrated for its generous portions of delicious, authentic Cologne specialties, particularly the legendary pork knuckle. While the atmosphere is lively and the stained-glass ceiling is a highlight, some visitors note that service can be slow during peak hours, and a few have experienced less-than-ideal hospitality. Reservations are highly recommended to avoid long waits.
"Wonderful restaurant. The waiters are older gentlemen who are kind and good with the speed of service. The food was very good and delicious. The pork knuckle with fried bacon potatoes was exquisite, a must try. It was much bigger than I expected but worth the money and fantastic. Mind that after 5:30PM, it gets crowded with long queues outside, as this is a super popular place. Atmosphere is mid but the tasty food and staff make up for it.
Enjoy."

"We had a great evening. The kölsch was quite good but sadly they don't brew it themselves (apparently they used to make beer back in the days but not anymore). Apple strudel was quite good. Highly recommend making a reservation beforehand."

"Ordered chef’s special and pork schnitzel under their specialities!
Food was decent, personally I love the chef’s special. It was pretty crowded on a Tuesday night and it took awhile to get seated, have orders taken and eventually food served!
Looks to be understaffed but, thankfully the service was good here! (unlike the other reviews that mentioned rude or racist)
Recommended but try to get there before you are hungry else the wait might ruin the whole experience."

The Kolsch Tradition: More Than Just Beer
The true experience of Kolsch is in its service. Servers, known as 'Köbes', are a vital part of the Brauhaus culture. They circulate with trays of fresh Kolsch and will automatically refill your glass as soon as it's empty. To signal you're finished, place your coaster on top of your glass. This continuous service encourages conversation and a relaxed atmosphere.
While Peters Brauhaus is a fantastic place to experience Kolsch, it's worth noting that they, like many other Brauhäuser, no longer brew their own Kolsch. They source it from local breweries, ensuring you still get an authentic taste of Cologne's signature brew.
Navigating the Menu: Cologne's Culinary Delights
Another local specialty you must try is Himmel und Ääd (Heaven and Earth). This dish poetically combines mashed potatoes (from the earth) with stewed apples (from heaven), often accompanied by blood sausage or pan-fried liver. It's a comforting and uniquely Rhineland combination. For those seeking a richer flavor, the marinated beef in raisin sauce with potato dumplings is also a highly praised option.
Beyond these iconic dishes, the menu features other German staples like Schnitzel and various sausages. The portion sizes are consistently generous, ensuring you get excellent value for your money. Don't forget to save room for a traditional apple strudel for dessert!
The Ambiance of Peters Brauhaus
The interior design typically features dark wood, traditional German decor, and a lively buzz of conversation. While the atmosphere is generally described as mid-range, the combination of the stunning ceiling, the hearty food, and the friendly, albeit sometimes brisk, service from the older gentlemen waiters contributes to a memorable experience.
It's a place where locals and tourists mingle, sharing tables and enjoying the authentic Cologne spirit. The energy picks up significantly in the evenings, transforming it into a vibrant hub for enjoying food and Kolsch.
