What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the impressive scale and historical significance of the mining exhibition and underground tours, offering a unique glimpse into over a thousand years of industrial heritage. The well-preserved Goslar Old Town is also a highlight. However, many note disappointment with the limited English explanations for tours and exhibits, making it less accessible for international visitors.
"centuries old mining exhibition, definitely impressive. You might need all day to thoroughly explore the place and take both the elevator and mine train tours. It has a great restaurant inside."
Kestutis Januskevicius
"Huge potential but for a UNESCO site a bit disappointed. Take your time to plan your visit. Depending on the time there could be no more free places. Be also aware that when you buy online tickets you cannot cancel them or reschedule."
Maciej Zadora
"Very disappointing for a WORLD Heritage site. Only for those with good German language skills.
A huge and potentially interesting site, but tours are mainly in German, none in english convenient for our visit. The exhibits are comprehensive but only partially translated, very badly, see photo. There isn't much of a theme through the exhibits be it the geology, the mining and processing or the history.
Our group included a fluent German speaker and a geologist. The signage in German is very technical, which probably doesn't aid translation.
It has great potential but really needs a rethink with stronger themes and narratives to the exhibits and explanations for the public not academics.
We gave it an extra star for helpful staff and lovely cake!"

The Rich History of Mining
Exploring the underground sections offers a visceral connection to the past. The mine train tours and elevator rides provide a unique perspective on the scale and challenges of subterranean work. These experiences are not just educational but also deeply atmospheric, allowing visitors to imagine the lives of the miners who toiled beneath the surface. The comprehensive exhibits aim to cover the entire lifecycle of mining, from extraction to smelting, though some visitors note that the narrative could be stronger and more accessible to an international audience.
Beyond the mine itself, the site's heritage extends to water management systems. These ingenious historical engineering feats were crucial for powering the mine and processing the ore. Understanding these systems highlights the interconnectedness of technology and resource extraction throughout history. The preservation of these elements ensures that future generations can appreciate the ingenuity and hard work that defined this significant industrial landscape.
Navigating the Site and Tours
While the exhibits provide a wealth of information about mining history, geology, and processing, a significant portion of the signage and explanations are in German. Visitors who are not fluent in German might find it challenging to fully grasp the details. Some reviews suggest that while partial translations exist, they can be imperfect. Therefore, consider visiting with a German-speaking companion or utilizing translation apps if you wish to understand every nuance.
Beyond the mine tours, the exhibition halls themselves are extensive and cover various aspects of the mining heritage. Allow ample time to explore these displays. The historic buildings of the site and the adjacent Goslar Old Town are also worth exploring, offering a picturesque setting and further historical context. Comfortable footwear is essential, as you'll be doing a considerable amount of walking, both above and below ground.
