"The most beautiful church I ever seen. What really impacted me was the krypta. What a magic place I went down 4 times just to look at the serenity of this place. Wish I had a chance to enter and meditate there. The surroundings were peaceful and clean I just love it"

"Essen's silent guardian: the Essener Dom, echoing tales from the 9th century.
In the heart of Essen, where history and faith intertwine, Essener Dom"

"Damaged in WWII but rebuilt this is a lovely church with a historic Romanesque west end resembling Aachen, with a gothic nave and apse. It has the famous Romanesque golden Madonna (behind grates and glass) and an equally old giant candle holder. The old crypt was closed whenever we visited. There are many interesting modern features too, I particularly loved the Buschulte (I think) stained glass in the nave and choir. Guessing late 1950s into the 1960s? Outside there are modern bronze doors, also very interesting - look out for poor John the Baptist's head and Salome. A nice quiet cloister on one side and large square on the other with wonderful plaited trees and a nice fountain. Also a modern statue of Alfrid, the founder. No tickets needed but check for when the services take place. We went for a lent musical meditation which included baroque organ music as well as some liturgical elements."
