What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Bautzner Straße Memorial to be a deeply impactful and historically significant site, offering a stark look into the DDR's secret police operations. While the lack of extensive English explanations is a common drawback, many find translation apps helpful. The somber atmosphere and the opportunity to explore the former prison cells are frequently highlighted as powerful aspects of the visit.
"I have been here a few times over the years and it is interesting to have watched it change. It is always the same guy who works there. I always joke with my wife that maybe he worked there before it was a museum? It has a book now when you go through your tour, as well as some decent signage in English. I think some parts that were open before, are no longer open. I remember writing in some of the cells. But it is a great opportunity to see where the NKVD and East German Secret Police kept, tortured and interrogated prisoners. Both male and female."

"Impressive even if explanation in english are limited to a recto-verso A4 sheet. Some panels during the path are also hi linguals german english. It's pity as this dark part of germany history should be more shared to non German speaker.
What is top is that they leave you free inside the prison to go at your speed."

"A glimpse into the past of the Russian controlled DDR. Displays are all written in deutsch but with Google lens you can easily translate. I'd recommend bringing your headphones so you can listen in English."
