What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unparalleled mountain views from Koruldi Lakes, often calling them some of the best in Svaneti. While the 'lakes' themselves can be underwhelming and more like puddles, the journey via a hired 4WD is an adventure, and the panoramic vistas of peaks like Ushba and Tetnuldi make the trip worthwhile for many.
"You don’t come here for the lakes, which are basically puddles, but for the views. From the Cross, it’s an upward hike for a few more hours but it’s certainly doable within the day (including for the time to get back to Mestia). You can take a car directly over here but then where’s the fun in that? Fantastic place and I’m glad I stuck to my guns in coming here."

"The next day after we went to The Khalde Glacier, we went to the Koruldi Lakes. Unfortunately, the snow was too heavy the day before, so we had difficulties going to the lakes. We happened to know that the lake was already freezing, so we did walk through the last ascending part to the lake, in the end we didn't manage to see the lake. But the scenery up there was stunning as well, with some kind of regrets to not being able to see the lakes, we ended our trip to Mestia Over here."

"【Tips to Koruldi Lake journey】
Never underestimate the path to Koruldi lake if you ever wonder whether you should go by your own car or not.
The path is really really rough. To understand how see my video attached(this is easier one, though)
Unless you are trully confident in your offroad driving skill especially mountain, you should never try that.
I was lucky that I hired 4WD car driver...
Most of the steep and rough parts of the path are narrow where only single vehicle can pass.
Through the ride to the lake, even our driver popped up on the driver seat like trampoline...
Approaching by walk or with professional drivers are what I truly recommend.
【How to find a 4WD car and a driver】
You can easily find them around the Mestia bus station as there is a lot of gents standing in front of 4WD cars. Sometimes, they may find you first haha.
【What should you ask them?】
Departure time, do they drive you until the lake? How long it takes?
Most importantly, how long can they wait at the lake. This point can be negotiated with price. We spent two hours around the lake and we really had great time.
By the way, the trip is always round trip as there is no available drivers around the top of the mountain.
Another important point is what kind of vehicle they drive. Even if a driver is standing in front of Toyota Land Cruiser, it might be just for show so better ask what vehicle is to be deployed on your journey.
We got a nice Land Rover which is very good.
Lastly, needless to say, pricing as well.
Koruldi Lake is definitely one of the highlights in Mestia and one of the destinations in Georgia that I would like to visit again.
Magnificence of Caucasus mountains, peaceful and quiet atmosphere with wild horses and the beautiful lake. It is like heavenly lake as described. You must not miss it❗
Wish you find the best driver and good luck. Be safe."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
You have a few options: hike the entire way (strenuous), hire a 4WD vehicle with a driver from Mestia (highly recommended due to rough roads), or drive partway and hike the rest. The roads are very rough and narrow, so self-driving without off-road experience is not advised.
Only if you have significant off-road driving experience and a very capable 4WD vehicle. The path is extremely rough, steep, and often single-lane. Most visitors opt to hire a local driver.
You can easily find drivers with 4WD vehicles waiting near the Mestia bus station. They often approach tourists directly. Negotiate departure time, duration of stay at the lakes, and vehicle type.
The travel time by 4WD can vary, but expect around 1-2 hours each way, depending on road conditions and how far up the driver takes you. Hiking can take significantly longer, often a full day.
Standard taxis are not suitable for the journey. You will need a dedicated 4WD vehicle, typically hired as a private tour or transfer.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
There is no specific entrance fee for Koruldi Lakes itself. The costs involved are primarily for transportation (hiring a 4WD) or if you are part of a guided tour.
Koruldi Lakes are accessible during daylight hours. There are no official opening or closing times, but accessibility can be affected by snow, especially in early spring or late autumn.
No advance booking is required for Koruldi Lakes. You can arrange transportation or plan your hike on the spot, though booking a 4WD driver a day in advance might be wise during peak season.
The main restriction is the challenging terrain. Weather conditions can also impact accessibility. It's advisable to check local conditions before heading up, especially outside of peak summer.
Visiting in early May is possible, but be prepared for potential snow, which can make the lakes frozen or inaccessible. The roads might also be challenging. It's best to inquire locally about conditions.
🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience
The main activities are enjoying the stunning mountain panoramas, taking photos, and a moderate hike around the lakes and higher viewpoints. You can also spot wild horses in the area.
No, the lakes can be quite small, especially later in the season or during dry periods. They are often described as 'puddles' by some visitors, but they are an integral part of the landscape.
The Cross viewpoint offers fantastic views. For even more expansive panoramas of the Caucasus range, continue hiking upwards past the main lakes.
Yes, even if you take a 4WD part of the way, there's usually some walking or hiking involved to reach the best viewpoints and explore the lake area. The trails can be steep.
Wear sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing as the weather can change quickly, and sun protection. A waterproof jacket is also a good idea.
📸 📸 Photography
The entire area offers incredible photo opportunities. Focus on the majestic peaks of Ushba and Tetnuldi, the reflective qualities of the lakes (when full), and the vast mountain landscapes. The Cross viewpoint is a classic shot.

While any camera can capture the beauty, a wide-angle lens is excellent for the expansive mountain views. A telephoto lens can be useful for capturing details of distant peaks. A tripod can help with low-light conditions.
Experiment with different compositions, including foreground elements like rocks or wildflowers to add depth. Look for reflections in the lakes. Be patient for the clouds to move and reveal the peaks.
Drone regulations can vary. It's best to check local advisories before flying. Be mindful of other visitors and the natural environment.

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Once at the higher points, the terrain can still be uneven, so supervision is key. The main draw for kids might be the open spaces and the chance to see wild horses. Pack plenty of snacks and water, as facilities are non-existent. The stunning mountain views can be awe-inspiring, but manage expectations about the 'lakes' themselves.
🚶♀️ Hikers and Adventurers
Alternatively, combining a 4WD ride part-way with a hike offers a good balance. Starting from the Cross viewpoint, you can tackle the remaining 4 km to the lakes. This section still presents a good workout with rewarding views along the way. Always carry sufficient water, food, and wear appropriate hiking gear, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
📸 Photographers
Bring a wide-angle lens to encompass the vastness of the scenery and a telephoto lens for detailed shots of the mountains. Consider a tripod for sharper images, especially in lower light. While the lakes themselves can be photogenic, especially with reflections, the true photographic gems are the surrounding peaks and the expansive alpine meadows.

Navigating the Rough Terrain: Transportation Options
For the adventurous, hiking the entire way is an option, but it's a strenuous, uphill trek that can take a full day. A popular compromise is to take a 4WD part of the way, perhaps to the 'Cross' viewpoint, and then hike the remaining distance (around 4 km). This allows you to experience the trail while saving some energy. Regardless of your chosen method, be prepared for a bumpy ride or a challenging hike; the journey is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself.
The 'Lakes' and the Majestic Views
To truly appreciate the scenery, it's recommended to explore beyond the main lake area. Hiking a bit further uphill can lead to even more dramatic viewpoints and a sense of solitude. The area is also known for its wild horses, adding a touch of untamed beauty to the landscape. Visiting early in the morning is often suggested to catch the best light and avoid the sparse crowds that do make the journey.
Best Times to Visit for Optimal Experience
Late spring, particularly May, can be a mixed bag. While the landscape is beginning to green, there's a significant chance of lingering snow. This can impact road accessibility and the appearance of the lakes, which might be frozen or not yet thawed. If you visit during this period, it's crucial to check local conditions beforehand. Regardless of the season, the mountain views are a constant, but the 'lake' experience can vary greatly.
