What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the Mestia Cross Viewpoint, calling the hike challenging but incredibly rewarding. The early morning ascent is highly recommended for the best experience. Some find the trails steep and slippery, especially in wet conditions, and advise caution.
"We hiked in August and left our hotel at 6am and it took us just under 2 hours to get to the top. It was a tough but manageable route. I would not advice to do it in the rain as it would be very slippery. If it was raining you can take the much longer road there. You also have the option to take the road down if you don't want the steep descent but we went back the same way and found it mainly fine.
The view from the top is beautiful and if you walk a bit further up to the cafe you can see more mountains which were beautiful. We were back in town by 9.30am."

"Great views. Two paths leading up here: the steep western one and the less steep but still very much vertical eastern one. I took the east path and it took me a bit over two hours to get here. The east path separates a lot into smaller footpaths, some of which are a bit tricky with lots of loose dirt and vegetation. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to tell which way in the eastern path was best. You can take the road here too which is way longer but more even and with lots more people on the way. I don’t recommend taking anything but the road by foot if it’s even raining and even then I’d be hesitant."

"I went out on the trail at 6 am in the summer. It was nice, not hot. The first part of the trail is rocky and steep, then at the crossroads I went straight along a more gentle path. And I didn't regret it, there were good views. The whole way from my hotel to the cross took 1 hr 24 minutes, with stops for a drink and photos. There was a building you could climb and look around the area. Then I went to Koruldi lakes. Closer to 8-9 am they start transporting tourists in cars."

Navigating the Trails to the Cross
For those seeking an easier route, or if the weather is poor, the road is an alternative. This is a much longer, more gradual ascent, and you'll likely encounter more vehicles and other visitors using this path. It's crucial to assess the weather conditions; the trails can become extremely slippery and dangerous if it rains. Many reviewers advise against attempting the hike in wet conditions, recommending the road as a safer, albeit longer, option.
Regardless of the path chosen, starting your hike very early in the morning, ideally before 7 AM, is a recurring tip. This strategy helps you avoid the midday heat, allows for a more pleasant hiking experience, and ensures you reach the summit with fewer people around, making for a more serene and photographic experience.
The Reward: Views and Beyond
However, the experience doesn't necessarily end at the cross. Many visitors recommend walking a bit further up to a small cafe located nearby. From this elevated position, the panoramic views expand even further, offering even more spectacular vistas of the surrounding peaks. This additional short walk is highly recommended for those who want to maximize their photographic opportunities and soak in the full grandeur of the Svaneti landscape.
After descending, some travelers mention visiting the viewpoint after a trip to the Koruldi Lakes, suggesting it's a worthwhile stop for another stunning perspective of Mestia. This highlights the viewpoint's role as a key attraction within the broader Mestia sightseeing experience.
