Reviews Summary

Gori Railway Station is a historic but basic transport hub. While incredibly affordable, expect very old trains with limited comfort, no amenities like food or Wi-Fi, and questionable toilet facilities. Many travelers recommend marshrutkas as a more comfortable alternative. Reddit+1

"I took a train from Gori to Kutaisi, it takes almost 5 hours, cost 8 lari. Train is really old, goes really slow, no air conditioning, there’s a toilet but I didn’t risk to use it... There are seats with just a wall instead of a window, so almost 5 hours of no views in a hot train is not worth it... (picture with my hand and “amazing” views is attached)... If I knew its going to be so uncomfortable I would take marshrutka (mini bus) instead, it takes only 2 hours. Train stops for 10 minutes between Gori and Kitaisi, there is time to buy a water and snacks. Very limited space in a train, people travel even with bicycles and children’s carriages, huge suitcases, this train barely can fit all this."

Navigating Georgian Railways

Traveling by train in Georgia, particularly from Gori, is an experience that requires managing expectations. The Gori Railway Station itself is a historical structure, offering a glimpse into the past. However, the trains operating from it are often described as very old, lacking modern amenities like air conditioning. Journeys can be slow, and comfort is not a priority. For instance, a trip from Gori to Kutaisi can take up to five hours, a stark contrast to the two-hour marshrutka ride. Reddit

Travelers often report issues such as uncomfortable seating, limited space for luggage, and even windows replaced by solid walls, blocking any views. The toilets are frequently cited as being in a dire state. While the Gori to Tbilisi train is a shorter route and more affordable (around 2 GEL), the overall condition of the rolling stock remains a consistent theme in reviews. It's crucial to check schedules, though online information can be unreliable; calling the railway hotline (1331) is recommended for accurate timings. Reddit

Despite these drawbacks, the Gori railway station remains a functional transport hub. For those seeking a more comfortable and efficient travel experience, marshrutkas (minibuses) are widely available and are the preferred mode of transport for many locals and tourists alike, offering a faster and more pleasant journey between cities. Gori's Historical Context at the Station

The Gori Railway Station is more than just a transit point; it's a place steeped in history, particularly concerning its most famous, albeit controversial, former resident: Joseph Stalin. While the station building itself boasts architecture from around 100 years ago, its significance is amplified by the presence of a statue of Stalin (referred to as 'Uncle Jay') within its premises. This serves as a subtle, yet undeniable, reminder of Gori's deep connection to the Soviet leader. Reddit

It's important to note that Gori has undergone changes regarding its historical monuments. The Monument of Stalin, a more prominent public display, has been removed, reflecting evolving perspectives on historical figures. However, the station retains elements that acknowledge this past. Visitors interested in the history of Stalin and the Soviet era will find these elements at the station intriguing, even if other public monuments have been relocated or dismantled. Reddit

Beyond the Stalin connection, the station's age and design offer a photographic opportunity for those interested in vintage transportation hubs. The atmosphere can transport visitors back in time, making it a point of interest for history buffs and photographers alike, even if the amenities are lacking. TikTok
