What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Uplistsikhe for its unique historical significance and stunning natural setting. The ancient rock-cut architecture and panoramic views are major highlights. Some find the sheer number of similar-looking caves repetitive, but the overall experience is widely considered a must-see in Georgia.
"Uplistsikhe is one of the most fascinating and unique places I’ve ever visited. This ancient cave city, carved into rock cliffs above the Mtkvari River, dates back to the early Iron Age and offers an unforgettable journey through Georgia’s deep history.
The site features a maze of rock-cut chambers, including homes, temples, wine cellars, and even a theater. It’s mind-blowing to imagine how people lived here centuries ago without modern tools. The architecture is simple yet incredibly impressive, and the stone pathways winding through the hillside create a magical atmosphere.
What makes Uplistsikhe even more special is the panoramic view from the top — you can see the river winding through the valley, with mountains in the distance. It’s quiet, open, and perfect for photography, reflection, or simply taking in the beauty of Georgia’s landscape.
There are informative signs around the site in English and Georgian, but I recommend hiring a local guide or reading about its history beforehand for a deeper experience.
Make sure to wear comfortable shoes — there’s a bit of climbing and uneven surfaces — and bring water, especially in summer.
Highly recommended for anyone visiting Georgia. It’s a must-see destination that combines history, adventure, and stunning natural scenery all in one place."

"Great place to visit. We visited in the evening. It was very quiet. River was flowing nearby and the park was well maintained. Lots of varieties of plants and flowers."

"Discover the cave city. The view from up is nice. There are 29 points but honestly all the caves are more or less the same. Their names are also elegant hall, nice hall, grand hall, everything is a hall. So honestly the points to watch are a joke but the overall experience is worth one time watch if just guessing the caves interest you. The entrance costs 15 gel per person and 20gel with wine tasting. There is also a listening tour for 20 gel. The tunnel at the end gives you the experience to walk inside the cave."
