"If you like to eat oysters 🦪 then this is the perfect place to visit.
This quiet little village is set on the side of a river estuary and the river is lined with little oyster shacks selling freshly harvested seafood - including crabs, mussels, oysters and many other small crustaceans.
You can sit and have a plate of oysters and glass of chilled white wine, then have a walk along the estuary to see the oyster beds and the ever changing banks of the river as it meanders into the sea.
There is lots of parking nearby and a cycling route from Talmont st Hilaire if you are feeling energetic!"

"Very sweet owners. We had amazing seafood and the white wine we ordered, in combination withe the bread, butter and seafood was a dream.
A local institution, you should visit. My recommendation, come at the end of lowtide to lunch there, then go and slowly extend to a picnic in the close by forest, or the dunes. And finish at the beach at high tide. I love this place."

"Came here Saturday night to sleep on the parking next to the restaurant in our camper. When we later did the dishes we heard a kitten making noises. It was sitting under the restaurants van in the rain. We gave it some food and cuddled with it and later went to bed. The day after the kitten was still there and it even came into our van in the pouring rain getting some more food and cuddle. Stayed on the parking until midday until it was time for us to leave. But we did not want to leave the kitten there because we had no knowledge of it was taken care of or not. So we went back to the restaurant and asked the owner Francois if he knew anything about it. Apparently it was his sons kitten and it had been missing. He got super happy that we had taken care of it and as reward he offered some great oysters and wine. He was really friendly and the rest of the staff as well. Great place to have some oysters and enjoy the amazing view of the salt dunes. Hopefully we’ll come back next summer eating some more delicious oysters and meeting the friendly restaurant owner Francois and his kitten again."

The Charm of France's Smallest Oyster Port

Petit Port de la Guittière holds the distinction of being the smallest oyster port in France, a title that imbues it with a unique, intimate charm. Nestled along a river estuary in Vendée, this protected Natura 2000 site is a haven for biodiversity and a testament to traditional oyster farming. The landscape is defined by the gentle flow of the river, the ever-changing mudflats exposed at low tide, and the rustic wooden huts of the oyster producers. It’s a place where nature and human activity coexist harmoniously, offering visitors a glimpse into a slower, more authentic way of life. TikTokInstagram

The port's appeal lies in its unpretentious authenticity. Unlike larger, more commercialized ports, La Guittière retains a genuine, local feel. Visitors can wander along the estuary, observe the oyster beds, and interact directly with the passionate producers who have dedicated their lives to cultivating these marine delicacies. The experience is less about grand attractions and more about savoring simple pleasures: the taste of the sea, the sound of the water, and the warmth of local hospitality. Reddit

Culinary Delights: Oysters and More

The undisputed star of Petit Port de la Guittière is its oysters. Harvested directly from the estuary, they are renowned for their freshness and exquisite flavor. Visitors can enjoy them at various oyster shacks, often served simply with a squeeze of lemon, a touch of shallot vinegar, or just as they are, allowing the pure taste of the ocean to shine through. A plate of these succulent bivalves, paired with a glass of crisp, local white wine, is considered an essential experience here. Reddit

Beyond oysters, the port offers a delightful selection of other fresh seafood. Expect to find locally caught crabs, mussels, and various small crustaceans, all prepared and served with a focus on their natural taste. The seafood platters are generous and represent excellent value, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or an early evening meal. The accompanying bread, butter, and wine are carefully chosen to complement the seafood perfectly. Reddit

For those looking to extend their culinary journey, many oyster farmers also sell their produce directly.
