What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
This historic church offers impressive Gothic architecture, with visitors noting the unique water stains on the ceiling. However, many report frequent closures and some have had negative experiences during services, feeling a lack of welcome. The Christmas Mass is noted as a particularly vibrant event.
"Like my sister.. Baptized. Communion. Non-practicing And at our grandmother's funeral we did not feel welcomed in the house of God. No respect, neither for the texts, nor for the grandchildren nor the great-grandchildren. One thing is certain. I was not practicing and that day I swore to myself never to set foot in a church again. And for each negative review it is deleted"

"A terrible experience at my grandmother's funeral. Father Émile showed no respect whatsoever: neither for the grieving family, nor for the wishes of the deceased, nor for the rituals of the ceremony, nor even for the original arrangements. A blatant lack of respect for my grandmother and our entire family. It's shameful.
We thought everyone was welcome in the house of God, but clearly that's not the case.
We were raised Catholic, most of us are baptized and have received communion, but not being a practicing Catholic is clearly a problem for Father Émile.
It's no wonder people are turning away from the Church, especially given current events; the Church would certainly benefit from improving its image... It's a failure!"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
Families with Kids
Consider focusing on the architectural elements that might capture their imagination, like the tall ceilings or stained-glass windows, rather than expecting interactive exhibits. If attending a service, ensure children understand the need for respectful silence. The reported instances of feeling unwelcome might also make it a less ideal destination for families seeking a relaxed outing.
Budget Travelers
The primary challenge for budget travelers is the uncertainty of opening hours. Architectural Significance
One unique aspect often mentioned is the presence of water stains on the ceiling. While not ideal, these marks are a visible part of the church's history and character, telling a story of its age and the elements it has weathered. They add a layer of authenticity to the visitor experience, making it distinct from more perfectly preserved structures.
When accessible, the interior offers a glimpse into religious art and design. The play of light through the stained-glass windows and the scale of the nave create a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere, inviting contemplation and appreciation for its historical and spiritual significance.
Visitor Experiences and Community Feedback
This sentiment is echoed by those who, despite being raised Catholic or having family ties to the church, found themselves feeling excluded due to not being 'practicing' members. This has led some to question the church's role in the community and its efforts to maintain relevance in contemporary society.
Conversely, there are positive accounts, such as the vibrant and packed Christmas Mass in 2024, indicating that the church can still be a focal point for community gatherings. However, the recurring theme of unexpected closures and the reported lack of consistent hospitality suggest that potential visitors should manage their expectations and prioritize confirming opening times.
