Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Mont-Dauphin's impressive Vauban fortifications and its unique status as a living, historic village. The stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Alps are a major highlight, offering a blend of history and natural beauty. Some find the parking and signage could be improved, and interior access requires careful timing.
"Fantastic fortress built by Vauban from 1693, one of the 12 major Vauban sites listed in 2008 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Behind his pink marble walls, we can see the barracks where the soldiers of Louis XIV lived, the scalable on the pic where they watched, the powder maker, the arsenal where they kept weapons and powder.
It is also also an unusual village where 170 inhabitants live, like everyone else, but in an extraordinary setting of southern sun, dazzling snow, silence and stones steeped in history. From the rampart, observe the strategic node of valleys : the Mountains of Queyras with a thousand hikes, the ski resorts of Vars and Risoul, the glaciers of the 4,000m of the Ecrins massif !"

"Looks amazing but never got in as I ran out of time sussing the place out.
What you need to know.
There are two parking areas. 1 at the bottom of a hill with a steep climb to the village (round trip 1.25 hrs) the other is at the top with about 10 mins flat walk to the entry point.
Neither are well signed from the road. Refer to Google maps for better guidance before setting off."

"Beautiful backdrop for an amazing international Jazz concert with the European Jazz Companions! What à day 🥰 I'll be back soon to visit the rest of the fortifications !"
