What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Château de Bourdeilles for its unique dual architecture, showcasing both a medieval fortress and a Renaissance palace. The interiors, filled with beautiful period furnishings and art, are a major highlight, as are the charming gardens. While the tower climb is challenging, the views are spectacular. Some find the exterior less picturesque than other castles, but the interior experience is highly rewarding.
"Beautiful chateau with stunning gardens but the outstanding feature here is the furniture, tapestries and paintings, absolutely beautiful, climbing the tower is quite challenging narrow and steep but the views are spectacular once at the top"
Chris and Rachael
"Kids activities in the summer were great, well worth paying a bit extra for. Lots of rooms to explore & great view from the top. Worth noting that although you are allowed in and out, no picnics allowed in the castle. There are benches five minutes walk in front of the church. No obvious bike lockups at the castle."
Sarah Brumby
"Great access, including the Wine Cave in the basements. Visitors are free to roam with handheld electronic guides in many languages. The Castle is great to see and get good access to the structures, with a few furnished rooms. The later Palace alongside is well furnished and gives an impression of priveleged life in ancient times. Good views from the ramperts over the village and to the river below.
English spoken at reception."

A Tale of Two Castles: Medieval Fortress vs. Renaissance Palace
The 16th-century Renaissance palace, built adjacent to the older fortress, offers a stark contrast in style and purpose. This part of the château was designed for comfort and elegance, featuring beautifully furnished rooms adorned with period antiques, tapestries, and paintings. It provides a vivid glimpse into the privileged life of the nobility during the Renaissance, a stark departure from the military function of the medieval keep.
This duality makes Château de Bourdeilles a unique destination, allowing visitors to experience two distinct periods of French history and architectural design within a single visit. The integration of these two structures creates a rich historical narrative that appeals to a wide range of interests.
Experiencing the Gardens and Special Events
During the summer months, the château truly comes alive with a variety of special events and performances. Visitors can experience unique spectacles such as vertical dance performances on the donjon, mesmerizing fire shows, and elegant Renaissance balls. These events offer a chance to immerse yourself in the château's atmosphere and witness its grandeur in a dynamic, entertaining way, often extending the visit into a memorable evening experience.
For families, the summer kids' activities are a significant draw, adding an extra layer of engagement and fun to the visit. These activities are often well-received and make the historical site more accessible and enjoyable for younger visitors.
