Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Karja Church for its surprisingly beautiful and interesting medieval sculptures and well-preserved Gothic architecture. The warm welcome from locals, particularly the parish priest, and the opportunity to contribute to ongoing restoration efforts are frequently highlighted as memorable aspects of the visit.

"I was very graciously shown around by the parish priest, Mr Vihuri. A unique experience in what must be one of the most surprisingly beautiful and interesting small churches I've ever seen. Lots of medieval sculpture in fantastic condition, both outside and in. Mr Vihuri was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable about the church and local history. I'll look back on this as an absolute highlight from my trip to Saaremaa."

"A very nice church from the late 13th century, boasting particularly rich decorations (especially in Estonian/northern European terms) and being progressively restored, year after year, by a bunch of passionates. I loved the warm welcome, and was more than happy to contribute to the restoration. Despite our effort speaking some Estonian, the lady welcoming us spoke perfect English and was very informative about what was currently going on with the church and its history. Lutheran worship service (holy mass) is being held weekly - on Sundays at 11 AM as of Summer 2025 - during the whole year. During the summer season, the church is open every day, and events are being held there regularly."

"Beautiful church well preserved in its authentic sense. The interior has the features of gothic and medieval touches and it's impressive how it has survived this long with no damaged to exterior or interior structures. Must visit if you are in this beautiful island. Recommended you read about it before or go with a guide who knows the history. Not too far from the town."
