The underground tunnels of Pula, Zerostrasse. This underground shelter, stretching under the whole city, was constructed during the First World War. The underground spaces served as an ammunition storage and a hiding place for locals. You can find memorial photos and other exhibits here. All the Pula shelters could accommodate up to 50,000 people. #zerostrasse #zerostrassepula #pula

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Zerostrasse tunnels for their historical significance and the refreshing escape they offer from Pula's summer heat. The cool, subterranean atmosphere and the unique elevator access to the Pula Kaštel are frequently highlighted as major draws. While some wish for more detailed historical information, the overall experience is considered fascinating and well worth the visit.

"Tunnels underneath the citadel with access to the citadel included in the price if you work your way up. I did this in reverse and made my way down through the tunnels. Blissfully cool after the heat of the exterior. Fascinated by the tunnels and side rooms. Would have liked to see more information provided on their wartime use, and not just learn about the trams. Found a lovely piece of art painted onto a wall in one of the side rooms, left there by a previous resident who had tried to bring a little of the outside indoors perhaps? A little forgotten masterpiece just waiting to be discovered. Just kind of stumbled across it as I explored, but maybe should have been signposted with a bit of context provided. The tunnels exit at locations in the old town. As a tourist myself this left me almost instantly in the shopping area at the end of my visit. I am sure not the original builders intention, but very welcome for someone like myself trying to get the most out of their day."

"Fascinating underground tunnels.
Zerostrasse is a network of WWI-era tunnels beneath Pula, originally built as shelters. It’s a cool and quiet escape from the summer heat, with interesting historical displays along the way. Not a long visit, but definitely worth it if you're curious about the city's wartime past."

"The underground world of Pula, intertwited with numerous tunnels. The tunnels were built during World War I so that people could escape into them in the event of air raids. You can find quite a few exhibitions here and you can take elevator up to Pula Kaštel. It is very nice and interesting to walk through all tunnels. It will take around one hour to discover all."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Zerostrasse

The Zerostrasse tunnels in Pula are a fascinating relic of the early 20th century, primarily constructed during World War I. Their initial purpose was to serve as vital air-raid shelters for the city's population, offering protection from aerial bombardments. Beyond personal safety, these subterranean passages also functioned as ammunition storage and provided a network of underground galleries and trenches for strategic purposes. The sheer scale of the system, capable of accommodating tens of thousands of people, underscores the anxieties and preparations of the era. Instagram+1

Today, Zerostrasse offers a unique window into this historical period. Visitors can explore the various chambers and corridors, many of which now house historical exhibits. These displays often shed light on the daily lives of those who sought refuge in the tunnels, as well as the broader military context of the time. The tunnels also feature information about Pula's past, including its electric tramway system, which operated from 1904 until 1934. Instagram This blend of military history and urban development makes Zerostrasse a compelling site for understanding Pula's layered past.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Zerostrasse is its connection to the Pula Kaštel (Castle). An elevator within the tunnels provides direct access to the fortress atop the hill, allowing visitors to seamlessly transition from the underground world to the historic citadel. This integration highlights the strategic importance of the tunnels in relation to the city's defenses. Some local legends even suggest the tunnels connect to other fortresses or even run under the sea to the Brijuni Islands, adding a layer of mystery to the already captivating site. Instagram+1

Experiencing the Cool Underground

One of the most immediate and appreciated aspects of visiting Zerostrasse, especially during the warm Croatian summers, is the refreshing coolness. The tunnels maintain a remarkably stable temperature of around 15°C (59°F) year-round. This natural air conditioning provides a welcome and significant contrast to the often intense heat experienced on the surface. Many visitors describe it as a blissful escape, allowing for a more comfortable and extended exploration of the historical site. Reddit+1

This consistent temperature not only enhances visitor comfort but also contributes to the unique atmosphere of the tunnels. The cool, still air can amplify the sense of stepping back in time, creating an immersive experience. It's a practical benefit that social media creators often highlight, recommending it as a perfect way to beat the midday sun. TikTokInstagram

Beyond the temperature, the underground environment itself is a key part of the experience. The long, winding corridors, the dimly lit chambers, and the sheer scale of the subterranean network create a sense of discovery. Visitors often find themselves captivated by the quietude and the historical weight of the space, making it more than just a tourist attraction but a journey into Pula's hidden history. Instagram+1
