"Incredible view! About 30 min trek through some pretty rocky paths but they are marked out. Alternative is take the road. I ran up the hiking track and came down the road way. Well worth it. Go early I went at 7am and there was just me and the grounds keeper 😁"
Stevie-Ann Dovico
"Went there 20 minutes before sundown with a taxi. You can also hike up. Absolutely beautiful 🤩 Better than the Fortica Fortress because you see all the islands around Hvar. Only two benches so it’s good to bring a towel to sit down on. The fort is closed so nothing to see apart from the amazing view. Not busy at all."
Luisa Rigoll
"Perfect for a good hike!! The views are incredible, you can see the coastline with a few islands as well.
Not much amenities available on top, so need to come prepared.
Do the hike instead of coming by road!"

The Hike to Napoleon Fortress
While the road route is an option, many Redditors and Instagram creators emphasize that the hike provides a superior experience. It allows you to truly appreciate the landscape and feel a sense of accomplishment upon arrival. Remember to carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months, as there are no amenities along the trail.
For those who prefer a less strenuous approach, taking a taxi part of the way up is also a viable option. This can save time and energy, allowing you to focus on the views from the top. However, the hike remains a popular choice for its scenic beauty and the sense of adventure it provides.
Capturing the Iconic Views
Many visitors flock to the fortress specifically for sunset, describing the experience as magical. The sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors, casting a warm, golden glow over the islands and the sea. This makes late afternoon the most sought-after time for photographers aiming to capture dramatic and memorable shots.
When planning your photo session, consider bringing a wide-angle lens to encompass the vastness of the landscape. A telephoto lens can also be useful for isolating details of the town or distant islands. Remember to check local drone regulations if you plan to capture aerial footage, as permits may be required.
Understanding the Fortress Structure
This historical fortification, built during the Napoleonic era, served a strategic military purpose. While its architectural significance might be limited for direct exploration, its elevated position was chosen for its commanding views, which remain its greatest asset. The very reason it was built—to survey the surrounding sea and land—is what draws visitors today.
Therefore, manage your expectations regarding exploring the fortress's interior. Instead, focus on appreciating the strategic location and the stunning natural beauty it overlooks. The experience is more about the journey to the top and the expansive scenery than the physical structure of the fort itself.
