Reviews Summary
Mount Wutai is a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site with a dense collection of temples, offering deep historical and spiritual insights. While some find the natural scenery average and management can be challenging with traffic and bus waits, the sheer number and diversity of temples are unparalleled. Visitors recommend hiring guides to fully appreciate the significance of each site and suggest strategic timing to avoid crowds.
"One of the four sacred mountains for Chinese Buddhism. Well known for a number of famous Buddhist temples. This is place to visit to see and know more about Buddhist temples from different sects, dynasties and times. Gorgeous structures and history in these temples. A few of the popular ones include Xiantong, Tayuan, Zhenghai and Luohou."

"Wu Tai Shan is one of the 5 Buddhist Holy grounds in China and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along this mountain range there was a total of 124 temples but only 47 remain today, of which 39 are located within the Wu Tai Shan range and 7 at its peripheral.
Saw some reviews saying the temples there are underwhelming and not as impressive as others. True but nowhere can you find as dense a gathering of Buddhist temples as Wu Tai Shan. To fully understand the significance of each of these temples, you should engage a guide, as each temple has an interesting origin. And you will need a couple of days.
Or do like we did. Choose a few more significant temples (or accessible ones) and sample the diversity in Buddhist teachings. We completed our tour within 5 hours including lunch and had an ample understanding of the site."

"There are many temples in Buddhist holy places and many people come to worship. But the scenery is relatively average. The management is poor and there are frequent traffic jams. It is recommended to arrive early to avoid traffic jams. Free buses in scenic areas often require a long wait, so it is better to walk."
