What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Wangshan Valley's surreal beauty, particularly the unique cliffside houses and the magical ambiance created by evening lanterns. The free entry and the charm of the ancient village are also significant draws. Some find the hiking trails rewarding, though less marked paths require caution.
"A pleasant scenic area southwest of the Suzhou city center with hiking trails. The southwestern end has restaurants. The best hike is from the restaurant area up to the temple, from which you can see even out to Lake Tai in good weather. You just walk up the car road (where the tour buses go) and eventually take a right at the Y intersection. There is a coffee shop at the temple, along with various vending machines that foreigners can't easily use. The temple has a vegetarian restaurant that I've never tried.
There are also other hikes. One goes west from the restaurant area through the tea fields into the bamboo forest and up a slope, but the view isn't as good as from the aforementioned temple. To the east, there are more hikes, but the trails aren't clearly marked, so attempt at your own risk.
The scenic area itself is free to enter, unlike some others."

"An absolute gem of a destination and almost completely unknown, even by locals, the Wangshan Scenic Area combines an ancient village of cobblestone streets and narrow passages, a fairly challenging mountain climb to a temple overlooking Suzhou, a waterfall and pond area that is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful areas that I have seen in China, an old farmhouse that we can visit and an extensive area of tea planting. For those who are up to the challenge, the area also serves as the entrance to a mountain trail over a nearby mountain range.
The mountain with the temple on top is Qizi (Seven Sons) mountain with a tragic and powerful story behind the name. Please allow 2 to 3 hours for ascent and descent (and a bit of viewing from the peak).
The mountain range trail is more of an all day affair so it would be advisable to set out early.
In the ancient village, there are a number of dining options and very reasonably priced fruits that might be appropriate for a little mountain climbing energy replenishment. There are two bathhouses in the village for those so inclined and a few guesthouse/inns as well. Be sure to notice the family crescents on the doors of the ancient houses.
Pro Tip: After entering the actual scenic area gates, there is a tourist village but prices are significantly higher so I would advise to eat and buy any supplies in the village outside the wooden gate.
The scenic area is reached by catching the Wangshan bus from Suzhou Subway, Line 4, Yuexi Station. You can get off at the first Wangshan bus stop and you will be right at the edge of the ancient village."
