What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Ganden Monastery as a masterpiece with breathtaking mountain views and a profound spiritual atmosphere. The kora walk is a highlight, offering stunning vistas. Some note the impact of historical destruction and ongoing development, while others find the toilet facilities basic.
"Masterpiece! Beautiful monastery on top of the mountain! Great to have a short walk around the monastery (3km) to see the valley. There’s a restaurant with affordable price and tasty sweet tea that you can have lunch. Toilet is a bit tricky so better to plan your trip without visiting toilet… It was very hot but windy when we did the hike so recommend to bring pocari water to drink to avoid dehydration especially for high mountain sickness and put more layers especially wind-proof clothing. Guide said half of the monastery was destroyed during Cultural Revolution so what we see is just half of it. At Golden time, there were 4k monks staying at the monastery and now it is 700… And they are adding more new buildings including a police station next to the monastery. How sad is that…"

"I love the way to go to Ganden Monastery. The view is really great. It is a good start to getting well with acute mountain and avoid the sickness with 1 day trip to Ganden to challenge yourself at 4,800m and then come back to Lhasa at 3,600m before taking any higher location"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The History and Significance of Ganden Monastery
Sadly, much of the monastery was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, with estimates suggesting over 90% of Tibetan monasteries suffered similar fates. What visitors see today is largely a reconstruction and restoration effort, though the spiritual essence and historical significance remain palpable. The presence of new buildings, including a police station, is a poignant reminder of the complex socio-political landscape.
Despite the historical damage, Ganden continues to be a vital center for Buddhist study and practice. The monks' dedication to their traditions, evident in their daily rituals and chanting, offers a glimpse into a living spiritual heritage.
Navigating the Altitude and Trekking
For the adventurous, the Ganden to Samye trek is an iconic pilgrimage route. This multi-day trek traverses high-altitude plateaus and offers a profound spiritual and physical challenge. It typically involves camping and requires good physical fitness, appropriate gear, and experienced guides. The trek is not just a physical journey but a spiritual one, following ancient pilgrimage paths.
When hiking the kora or undertaking the longer trek, packing layers of clothing is essential. The weather at high altitudes can change rapidly, with cold winds and bright sun. Windproof outer layers are particularly important. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is a must for navigating the uneven terrain.
