What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gogol Street is a long commercial avenue with historical architecture, though some find it less authentic than advertised. Visitors appreciate landmarks like Qiulin Department Store and St. Alexeev Church, and the charming Gogol Bookstore. The street offers a pleasant walking experience, especially in winter.
"Overrated by the media. There is not that many authentic old buildings along this street as what they claimed. It is a fairly long street stretching more than a few km. The only interesting is the Qiulin 秋林公司 department store."

"Gogol Street, intersecting Jihong Street to the west and Wenchang Street to the east, is a commercial street. Built in 1901, it has undergone several name changes. Originally named Gogol, after the Russian author Gogol, it now retains this name. In early winter 2019, I walked from the intersection of Dongdazhi Street and Qiulin Department Store to St. Alexeev Church Square at the intersection of Gexin Street, a 30-45 minute walk. I encountered snow on the return trip. In addition to the Qiulin Department Store and St. Alexeev Church, this stretch of street is dotted with other historic buildings, including the Japanese Consulate and the former residence of the Consul. Buildings along the street feature Western-style facades, recently constructed to complement the renovation of Gogol Street. Near the river, this stretch of street is home to a children's park. The elegant Gogol Bookstore, located on the second floor, is also located along this stretch."
