What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Pekelmeer Salt Pans to be a unique and starkly beautiful landscape, offering a glimpse into Bonaire's salt industry and a chance to see flamingos in their natural habitat. While some note the limited historical signage and the distance from which flamingos are viewed, the overall experience is considered worthwhile for its distinctive scenery and wildlife opportunities.
"The austere landscape of Bonaire is part of the experience-very flat and a 1-1/2 lane wide narrow road in the trek-a higher clearance vehicle to pull off and on the road is advised. Stopped to see the slave salt houses and light house on the way-and rough coral beach with stacked rocks that looked like old grave markers-not much history signage to explain but was unique to see. The overt salt piles from salt mining of Cargill on the way dominates the landscape. Cargill owns most the land on this end so lots of no trespass signs- saw several flamingoes in their evaporation ponds from a distance, and got lucky to see a few of them take flight, but unfortunately no access to explore or walk in to get closer to them."

"Definitely lots of flamingos here although not really where google maps tells you to go. Drive a little further (like closer to the lighthouse) to actually see them. Be aware that you cannot get very close to them. If you want to get closer, there's a flamingo viewing area in the north of the island near Rincon and 1,000 steps. There's less birds up there but you can get closer. Still worth a stop if you have some time and you're in the area (pretty close to the salt pier and the lighthouse)"

"The day was cloudy and we didn't see many flamingos, but I still enjoyed the experience. It's a beautiful place."

The History and Industry of Pekelmeer
Historically, the area also holds significance due to the presence of slave huts. These small, white structures were built to house enslaved laborers who worked in the salt pans. Seeing these remnants offers a poignant glimpse into the island's past and the harsh conditions faced by those who contributed to its salt industry. While historical signage might be sparse, their presence is a powerful reminder of this era.
Today, the salt pans continue to be a vital economic resource for Bonaire, while also serving as a unique natural habitat. The contrast between the industrial scale of salt mining and the natural beauty of the wildlife creates a compelling and thought-provoking landscape for visitors.
Wildlife Encounters: Flamingos and Beyond
While flamingos are the stars, the salt pans also attract other avian species. As a coastal wetland, it serves as a stopover point for migratory birds and a habitat for various resident shorebirds. Keep an eye out for different types of waders and seabirds that frequent the area.
It's important to remember that these are wild animals in a protected environment. Visitors are advised to observe them from a distance and refrain from disturbing their natural behavior. While you can't walk into the sanctuaries, the views from the roadside are often rewarding, especially if you drive further towards the lighthouse.
