"Visited today and had a lovely time. It was a very enjoyable experience. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, which really just added to the atmosphere. We were able to watch a live demonstration of a Hawkins rifle being fired which was very neat. There was also an afternoon tea about to take place that looked wonderful, I wish I had known in advance as tickets were sold out. I really appreciated how every display had such detail and care put into the presentation. We had lunch inside the visitors centre and were very pleased with the food. Bathrooms were clean, parking was easy, and overall I would say the experience was accessible."

"We found the museum, period costumes and the demonstrations to be wonderful. The day was beautiful...we liked being able to take the dogs (who enjoyed everything but the firearms demo). The staff were informed and authentic and when I lost my cell phone went out of their way to help me retrace my steps and find it."

Donna

"Such a fun outing! The staff were all so helpful and kind. Well kept paths and spots to sit and take in the scenery. Beautiful displays with lots of history being shared. The staff approached us to give me info or ask if we had questions. It was my first time here but will be making it a yearly tradition!"

The Hudson's Bay Company's Role

Lower Fort Garry stands as a testament to the significant influence of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in the development of Western Canada. Established in the mid-19th century, the fort served as a crucial trading post and administrative center for the HBC. It played a vital role in the fur trade, connecting Indigenous peoples with European markets and facilitating the expansion of British influence across the prairies. The fort's strategic location on the Red River was key to its success, allowing for efficient transportation of goods and furs. InstagramReddit

Visitors can gain a deep understanding of this era through the interpretive programs offered at the site. Costumed interpreters bring the history to life, showcasing daily routines, the importance of various trades like blacksmithing, and the complex relationships between the HBC, settlers, and Indigenous communities. The fort's architecture itself reflects the era's building techniques and the company's commitment to establishing a strong presence in the region. InstagramReddit

Exploring Lower Fort Garry offers a tangible connection to Canada's past, highlighting the economic and social forces that shaped the nation. It's a place where history is not just read about but experienced, providing valuable context for understanding the country's westward expansion and the legacy of the fur trade. Reddit

Engaging with History Through Interpretation

One of the most praised aspects of Lower Fort Garry is its passionate and knowledgeable interpreters. These individuals, often dressed in period costumes, go beyond simply reciting facts; they embody the history of the fort. They actively engage visitors, answering questions, sharing personal anecdotes from the era, and demonstrating historical skills. This interactive approach makes the learning experience far more memorable and impactful than a traditional museum visit. InstagramReddit

Visitors frequently mention specific demonstrations, such as the firing of a Hawkins rifle, as a standout experience. Reddit These live reenactments provide a visceral connection to the past, illustrating the technologies and daily challenges faced by those who lived and worked at the fort. The interpreters' enthusiasm is often highlighted, with many visitors feeling that the staff genuinely care about sharing the fort's stories and making the visit enjoyable. InstagramReddit

This commitment to authentic interpretation transforms Lower Fort Garry from a static historical site into a dynamic living history experience.
