Denis Drainville

"Beautiful, beautiful road to travel, surrounded by mighty mountains."

Charles Vasquez

"It is located in the heart of Glacier National Park, and is about two hours drive from Revelstoke on the way to Golden, on the Trans-Canada Highway. There are beautiful views of the mountains all around. These mountains are popular for ski mountaineering, camping, hiking and mountain climbing. There is a Visitor Information Center here, which has a good display of stuffed wildlife and information about the history of the Pass. There is a public toilet, but no coffee or snacks shop. It is a calm and scenic place with a good rest area and plenty of parking to stop while driving along the highway."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Rogers Pass

Rogers Pass is steeped in history, primarily related to the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The pass was a formidable obstacle, and its completion in 1885 was a monumental engineering feat that unified Canada. The railway line through Rogers Pass was notoriously prone to avalanches, leading to significant loss of life and numerous delays. This challenging history is vividly brought to life at the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre, which details the struggles and triumphs of building the railway and later, the Trans-Canada Highway. Instagram

The area is still one of the most avalanche-prone regions in Canada. To ensure safe passage for travelers, Parks Canada conducts extensive avalanche control operations. These involve using howitzers to trigger controlled avalanches, clearing the slopes before they become a danger to the highway. This fascinating aspect of mountain safety is often highlighted by visitors and is a testament to the ongoing efforts to manage this wild landscape. TikTok

Beyond the railway and highway, Rogers Pass is also a gateway to Glacier National Park, a pristine wilderness area. The pass itself offers stunning views and serves as a starting point for numerous hiking and backcountry adventures, attracting outdoor enthusiasts year-round. TikTok+1

Winter Adventures at Rogers Pass

Rogers Pass transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting skiers, snowboarders, and snowshoers. It's a prime destination for backcountry skiing and ski touring, with vast expanses of powder-laden slopes. Skiers often describe the terrain as challenging and rewarding, with deep powder being a major draw. TikTok+2

While the pass itself is a hub for backcountry enthusiasts, nearby Revelstoke Mountain Resort offers a more accessible, in-bounds skiing experience. Revelstoke is known for its impressive vertical drop and challenging terrain, making it a mecca for advanced skiers seeking fresh tracks and steep descents. TikTok+1

It's crucial for winter visitors to be aware of the avalanche risk. Proper training, equipment, and knowledge of snow conditions are essential for anyone venturing into the backcountry. Parks Canada actively monitors and manages avalanche hazards to ensure the safety of the Trans-Canada Highway. TikTok
