What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Temple is hailed as an epic, rewarding scramble with unparalleled summit views, considered a highlight of Banff National Park. While the initial ascent is manageable, the challenging, loose scree above Sentinel Pass requires significant effort and experience. Access via shuttle bus to Moraine Lake is a key logistical hurdle that requires advance planning.
"What an amazing experience this hike was - The absolute pinnacle of what Banff National Park has to offer.
Started the hike from Moraine Lake around 8 a.m. Did the mistake of ascending a bit too fast from the get-go, reaching the Sentinel Pass within an hour - The trail up to that point has no technical challenge. Once you reach the pass, the terrain changes completely and the technical difficulty increases.
At that point you have 2.5km of ( & 900m elevation gain) semi steep terrain to conquer, and loose rock on the way to scramble through. It took a bit less than 2.5hrs to reach the top from Sentinell Pass.
But the views alone will make the efforts 100% worth it, they were truly something special.
Due relative steepness and loose rocks, the descend will also require some time. Reached the Moraine Lake around 3 p.m, including 2 hours spent on the summit.
Few spots to refill water from running stream can be found along the first 4km of the hike, but was able to survive with 4 liters."

"We scrambled up the summit of Mount Temple, elevation 3550 m ,on August 15, 2023, 16 km out and back, 1700 m elevation gain. Lots of scrambling, pathfinding and steep loose rocky terrain above the Sentinel pass. Fantastic panoramic views from the summit. We booked Parks Canada shuttle bus for 6:30-7:00 a.m. in the morning three months in advance and came back on the lust shuttle leaving at 7:30 p.m. There is no private car access now to Moraine Lake parking lot. This was a capstone scrambling experience for our family."

🎫 ⛰️ Onsite Experience
Mount Temple is considered a challenging scramble. While the initial hike to Sentinel Pass is moderate, the terrain above the pass involves steep, loose scree and requires scrambling skills. It's not recommended for beginners.
The hike is typically 16 km round trip with significant elevation gain (around 1700m). Expect to spend 8-12 hours to complete the hike and summit, including time spent at the top.
Pack layers of clothing, sturdy hiking boots with good grip, plenty of water (at least 4 liters), high-energy snacks, a first-aid kit, sun protection, and a headlamp for early starts.
Above Sentinel Pass, the route involves significant scrambling over loose rock and scree. There's a notable 'grey band' section that can be challenging, especially in wet conditions.
The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks, including iconic lakes and surrounding peaks. It's considered one of the best views in the Canadian Rockies.
📸 📸 Photography
The summit provides unparalleled panoramic shots. Sentinel Pass offers dramatic vistas, and Larch Valley is stunning, especially during autumn. Sunrise and sunset create magical light.
Sunrise offers incredible light and fewer crowds, making it ideal for photographers. Sunset can also be spectacular, but ensure you have a headlamp for the descent.
A wide-angle lens is great for landscapes, and a telephoto lens can capture distant peaks. A sturdy tripod is useful for low-light conditions. Don't forget extra batteries!
While the primary focus is Mount Temple, you'll get glimpses of Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks from certain points on the ascent, especially early on.
If visiting in late September, Larch Valley transforms into a golden wonderland, offering incredible photographic opportunities with the vibrant larch trees.

👨👩👧 Families with Experienced Teens
Key considerations for families:
* Book shuttles far in advance. This is non-negotiable for Moraine Lake access.
* Start extremely early. This gives you more time and reduces pressure to catch the last shuttle.
* Assess your teen's comfort level. If they are hesitant about heights or loose terrain, this might not be the right hike.
* Carry ample supplies. Ensure everyone has enough water, food, and appropriate gear.
💪 Advanced Hikers & Scramblers
Tips for advanced hikers:
* Consider an early start for sunrise. This offers unique photographic opportunities and a more solitary experience.
* Be prepared for variable conditions. Even in summer, weather can change rapidly.
* Explore variations. Some may consider linking this with other routes in the area if time and conditions permit, though Mount Temple itself is a full-day commitment.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Photography tips:
* Wide-angle lens for sweeping mountain vistas.
* Telephoto lens to isolate distant peaks and details.
* Tripod for low-light conditions and sharp images.
* Capture the larches in autumn for vibrant colors.
* Be mindful of weather. Clouds and storms can add drama but also pose challenges.

The Mount Temple Scramble: What to Expect
It's crucial to understand that this is not a beginner-friendly hike. While the initial ascent to Sentinel Pass is manageable for fit hikers, the scramble to the summit demands comfort with exposure, loose rock, and significant elevation gain over a short distance. Proper footwear with excellent grip is non-negotiable, and trekking poles can aid stability on the descent.
Many successful summit attempts involve starting very early, often before sunrise, to take advantage of cooler temperatures and better visibility. This also allows ample time to descend before dark and to catch the last shuttle bus from Moraine Lake. The reward for this effort is an unparalleled panoramic view that many describe as the pinnacle of their Canadian Rockies experience.
Navigating Moraine Lake Access
The primary recommended method of access is the Parks Canada shuttle bus system. These shuttles must be booked online, often months in advance, as they sell out extremely quickly. Missing your shuttle slot can mean missing your chance to hike that day. Planning is paramount.
An increasingly popular alternative is to e-bike to the Moraine Lake parking lot. This requires a significant physical effort, especially if starting from a distance, but offers more flexibility than the shuttle. Some hikers start their e-bike journey in the very early morning hours to reach the trailhead for a sunrise hike.
Best Seasons for Mount Temple
Attempting Mount Temple too early in the season (e.g., May or June) is strongly discouraged. Significant snow and ice can persist on the upper slopes and the scramble sections, making the route extremely dangerous and potentially impassable without mountaineering experience and equipment. Conditions can change rapidly, and even in summer, unexpected snow can occur.
For those seeking fewer crowds, weekdays are generally better than weekends. However, even on weekdays during peak season, the trails and shuttle buses can be very busy. Starting your hike very early in the morning is the best strategy to avoid the largest crowds and enjoy a more serene experience.
