What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Woodbine Mohawk Park offers free live standardbred racing with ample parking, making it an accessible and exciting venue. While the atmosphere and the races themselves are often praised, dining experiences, particularly the buffet, have received mixed reviews regarding price and service quality.
"A racetrack that is very nice! Big grand stands that are glassed in, lots of lights, food hut outside as well as a bar with a good selection of drinks, a small patio area around the food hut to eat at, small smoking section, and lots of picnic tables, chairs and some patio couches.
There is a trackside restaurant, usually you need reservations but they gave us a table in the back we couldnt see the track but they gave us drinks (even doubles, casino wont do that) and took our orders, the food took aome time but when it came it was yummy broccoli soup and the beef brisket with onion rings. It was pricey as expected and the bar tender was our waitress since we were seated so close to the bar, overall it was an ok restaurant it did the job and filled us up.."

"There were 13 of us who booked an evening out to enjoy the buffet and have some fun with pony betting. Thankfully, we still had a great time together—but now onto the disappointing part.
The food and selection were shockingly poor, far below what you’d expect even at a basic Cuban resort. In fact, the service at a Cuban resort would easily outshine the service we received at Mohawk. For $188.00 for two people (one drink each, plus taxes and a mandatory 18% gratuity), we honestly would have had better quality and variety at a premium restaurant.
The “hot food” options were ham, sliced turkey roll, burnt mashed potatoes, and a mysterious Alfredo something to. We ended up clearing our own plates because our server was nowhere to be found. I guess with an automatic tip added, there’s no incentive to actually provide service.
Not once were we asked about food allergies—something we were asked daily at a resort in Mexico last year. And looking around the buffet area, we noticed how empty it was. Makes us wonder if others already knew to stay away and we just didn’t get the memo.
Come on, Mohawk—this is supposed to be an enjoyable night out. You can do much better."

"We went to bet on the horses on Sunday night and had a very fun (and profitable) experience, in big part because of the helpful and cheerful teller. Shoutout to Janet for her enthusiasm and great betting tips!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Understanding Standardbred Racing
During a race, you'll notice the distinct styles of trotting and pacing. Pacers tend to be faster, while trotters require more precise footwork to avoid breaking gait. The drivers employ various strategies, from aggressive early speed to strategic pacing, to outmaneuver their competitors. The Mohawk Million and the North America Cup are among the major stakes races held here, attracting top talent and significant prize money.
For newcomers, understanding the betting options can add to the excitement. Common bets include the win, place, and show, as well as more complex exotics like exactas (predicting the top two finishers in order) and trifectas (predicting the top three). Friendly tellers can assist with placing bets, making the experience accessible for everyone.
Dining Experiences at the Park
For a more casual and quicker bite, food huts are available outside the main grandstands. These typically serve standard racetrack fare, perfect for grabbing a meal between races. Many visitors appreciate the convenience of these options, allowing them to maximize their time watching the races. The park also features numerous picnic tables and patio areas, encouraging a relaxed atmosphere for enjoying food purchased onsite.
However, it's worth noting that the buffet option has drawn significant criticism for being overpriced, with limited selection and subpar service. Several reviews highlight disappointment with the food quality and the lack of attentive waitstaff, especially when an automatic gratuity is applied. For those considering the buffet, it's advisable to weigh the cost against the potential dining experience.
The Thrill of Live Racing
Beyond the races themselves, the park offers a comprehensive entertainment experience. Free admission and parking make it an accessible outing for everyone, encouraging spontaneous visits. The availability of various seating options, from glassed-in grandstands to outdoor picnic areas, ensures comfort for all attendees.
Many visitors highlight the helpful and cheerful staff, particularly the betting tellers, who contribute positively to the overall experience. This friendly service, combined with the excitement of the races and the beautiful sunset views, makes Woodbine Mohawk Park a memorable destination for a fun and engaging evening.
