What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Georgian Bay Islands National Park for its stunning natural beauty, well-maintained trails, and friendly park staff. The unique transition between Carolinian and Canadian Shield ecosystems is a major draw. However, some find day trips too short due to ferry schedules, and the cost of access, particularly water taxis and bike rentals, can be a drawback for some. The presence of moored boats can also detract from the scenic views for certain visitors.
"Gorgeous national park. Rec staff were super nice and knowledgeable. Loved the activities. Trails were well maintained. Make sure to go on Huron trail. Lots of vibrant coloured mushroom. See my pictures. Made me feel like I was on a Disney movie. I rated this review one less star because the area was flooded with motorized boats. I shouldn’t be surprised because the park offers mooring. But the sights of many boats made the view less attractive, plus some were very loud. Imagine this: you rented a cabin by the lake, step out of the porch, and there’s about 5-8 moored boats at the front. Overall, it was a lovely place."

"Small and mighty park, did a day trip to the north part through park ferry service. One star off as there is only one ferry per day from 9:30AM to 1:30PM, wish it could be longer. Many people get there using personal boats though.
There is bear activity on the island, but the bears are not permanent residents on the island. I did not see any snakes or bears during my visit.
Did fairy lake loop trial, and a small loop of Rockview and the Masassauga trail through the portage trail in relaxed pace, and had plenty of time to have lunch and cool off at the small sandy beach in honeymoon bay. There are plenty of markers along the trails so you cannot miss them."

"Super underrated national park. 20km+ of hiking trails with beautiful views, with plenty of front and backcountry options. Rangers were friendly and helpful. My only complaint is the price of getting there . They have a large ferry, but campers cannot use it regardless of how little things you bring and water taxis are extremely expensive"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For a more relaxed experience, look for beaches like the one at Honeymoon Bay for a picnic and a chance to play. While there's potential for wildlife sightings, it's wise to educate children about respecting nature and maintaining a safe distance from any animals they might encounter. Camping offers the most flexibility for families, allowing for a less rushed exploration and more time to enjoy the island's natural wonders.
🚶 Hikers and Nature Enthusiasts
For those seeking a deeper connection with nature, camping is highly recommended. This allows ample time to explore the various trail networks, discover hidden coves, and appreciate the park's biodiversity. Be prepared for varying terrain and bring appropriate footwear. The park's relative isolation also means fewer crowds on the trails, enhancing the sense of tranquility.
💰 Budget Travelers
Bike rentals are an additional expense ($30 per person). If you're on a tight budget, focus on exploring the areas accessible by foot from the ferry drop-off points. Packing your own food and drinks is essential, as options on the island are limited or non-existent. Camping can be a more cost-effective way to experience the park for an extended period compared to multiple day trips via water taxi.

Navigating Beausoleil Island
Getting around Beausoleil Island can be done by hiking or biking. For those who want to cover more ground, especially to reach the more distant northern sections, renting bikes is a popular option. However, be aware that bike rentals come with a fee. If you prefer to hike, there are over 20 km of well-maintained trails, including the scenic Huron Trail, Fairy Lake Loop, and Masassauga Trail.
When planning your visit, consider the ferry schedule carefully. Day trips can feel short, with only about 3.5 hours of usable time on the island due to ferry timings. For a more immersive experience, camping is highly recommended, allowing you to fully explore the island's diverse ecosystems and enjoy its tranquility without the rush.
The Unique Geology and Ecology
In the southern portion of Beausoleil Island, you'll find the Carolinian forest ecosystem, characterized by deciduous trees and a rich understory. This is the most biologically diverse region in Canada. As you move north, the landscape dramatically shifts to the Canadian Shield, with its rugged granite formations, coniferous trees, and boreal forest characteristics. This transition is not just a visual change but also a significant ecological shift, showcasing the park's unique position.
This biodiversity extends to the smaller inhabitants as well. Visitors have noted the presence of vibrant mushrooms on trails like the Huron Trail, creating a magical atmosphere. While wildlife sightings can vary, the park is home to various bird species and reptiles. Awareness of potential bear activity is also advised, though bears are not permanent residents of the islands.
Planning for Day Trips vs. Camping
Camping, on the other hand, provides the opportunity for a more in-depth exploration. It allows you to set your own pace, hike or bike to various points of interest without the pressure of a ferry schedule, and truly immerse yourself in the island's natural environment. The park offers camping facilities, including washrooms and food storage shelters, with some sites even featuring comfort stations with showers, making it a viable option for a weekend getaway.
If you opt for a day trip, strategic planning is key. Consider booking the ferry to Chimney Bay if possible, as it might offer a better experience than the Cedar Springs route. Renting bikes can also help maximize your time by allowing you to cover more ground quickly. However, many visitors conclude that to truly experience the park's magic, an overnight stay is the way to go.
