"What a beautiful place to visit. The ocean has carved this sandstone peninsula into an unusual wavelike formation. Just drive for 5 minutes from the ferry terminal towards the northern tip of Gabriola island. A short 2-3 minute walk from the road will take you to the area. If the tide is low you can see the carved out wave like formations along with some sea life like sea stars, sand dollars etc.
Standing at the tip of the island give a breathtaking view of the beautiful Pacific ocean surrounding you."

"This is an incredible scenic spot in gabriola island. Take bc ferry from nainamo waterfront and than take a local bus. Walk a few minutes to get to this breathtaking spot. By bus, you can stay here for three hours to explore. Most importantly, check the low tide schedule. When in high tide, you may not be able to get there. Check my photo to see the entrance. In the meantime, visit the village for coffee and lunch."

"I thought we would only be able to see at low tide but we were there at high tide (3 metres) and it was fully accessible. It is so amazing to see such geological formations in an easy to access part of BC. Went on a Sat afternoon in late September (close to Truth & Reconciliation Day) and very few people there."

The Geology of Malaspina Galleries
The sandstone itself is composed of fine grains of quartz and feldspar, cemented together over geological time. This relatively soft rock is more susceptible to erosion than harder coastal rocks, allowing the sea to carve intricate patterns, overhangs, and hollows. The unique texture and patterns are a result of differential erosion, where softer layers wear away faster than harder ones.
Visiting during low tide is highly recommended not only to see the full extent of the carved formations but also to explore the fascinating tide pools that form within the nooks and crannies. These miniature ecosystems teem with life, offering a glimpse into the diverse marine environment of the Salish Sea.
