What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Sveta Nedelya Cathedral for its stunning neo-Byzantine architecture and captivating, ornate interior filled with vibrant frescoes and a gilded iconostasis. Its central location and free entry are major draws, though a small donation is requested for photography. Some locals prefer it over more famous churches.
"While it's not the most famous nor emblematic church in Sofia, the locals seem to prefer or like it better than the patriarchal church that is known by many.
You are allowed to take pictures inside but only with a 5 Lev or 2-3 euro donation. You can donate immediately on the counter to your left upon entering. Please donate if you are taking photos! The money is used for the church upkeep!"

"Located just steps from Serdica Metro Station, Saint Nedelya Cathedral impresses at first glance with its striking neo‑Byzantine architecture and central dome that defines Sofia's skyline . As you pass through the entrance—free and welcoming—you're drawn into a serene interior enriched with vivid frescoes, ornate icons, and a beautifully carved gilded iconostasis dating from 1865 .
Despite its tranquil ambiance today, the cathedral carries a profound and somber history. In 1925, it was the site of Bulgaria’s deadliest terrorist attack: a bomb exploded during a funeral service, killing over 200 people and injuring hundreds more . After rising from that tragedy, the church was meticulously rebuilt and restored by 1933 to stand once again as a place of worship and beauty."

"One of my fave cathedrals in Sofia.
I adore the ethereal vibe. However, it's crucial to keep in mind that it's a place for prayer, and appropriate conduct or attire is wise to keep in mind.
On the outside, it is stunning, but on the inside, it is truly captivating. If you are in Sofia, don't be afraid to stop by. Like myself, I think you'll be overjoyed.
Enjoy"
