"Underground archaeological sites! Amazing!"

"I have to commend those responsible for the preservation of this ancient Roman site."

Gerhard Geldenhuys

"A must-see! The 'Largo' archeological reserve is a part of the Ancient Serdika Complex situated indoors, beneath today's Nezavisimost (Independence) Square. It contains the remains of one of the two main streets of the Roman town, the Decumanus Maximus, which connected The Eastern and The Western gates of Serdika. A large residential building, covering an entire insula (urban block), can be seen in the eastern end of it. The building had tabernae (small shops), from which travelers and the town’s inhabitants could purchase food and various goods. A lapidarium is also located in this area - it displays different monuments from the collection of the National Archaeological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, some of which were actually excavated from Nezavisimost Square and the surrounding area."
