What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the St. Nikola Basilica Ruins to be a worthwhile destination, especially when combined with a hike and the nearby waterfall. While not a primary attraction for everyone, its historical depth and scenic forest trail make it a pleasant day trip from Bansko. Some note it can be a bit tricky to find, but the effort is rewarded with a unique glimpse into ancient and medieval history.
"I wouldn't say this is a must see while you're staying in Bansko but it makes for pleasant day trip when combined with a walk through the forest and a visit to the nearby St Nicholas waterfall. The church is built upon a relatively recent excavated archaeological site. It's located around 5km from Bansko and can be reached by a few different options. Probably the best is to follow the loop trail marked by blue/white posts as it is a wide double track mountain bike trail through the forest and involves the least elevation gain to the church. The tourist information centre in Bansko has a good map. The top of the waterfall is located nearby although it is not that clearly marked."

"Its a little walk from Bansko, 1hr 30mins. There is a "new" Church built on an ancient site / Necropolis, this was a fortress from Thracian 300AD to Bulgarian times 1400AD.
There is also a fantastic view point nearby and a waterfall.
So its worth a walk / visit. Take a picnic and make a day of it."

"Recent archaeological excavations uncovered a settlemetn in this place that has been there since before the Iron age - changing civilisations and cultures. A new / modern church was built upon the foundation of a medieval church. Part of the fortress and adjoining service and production buildings are exposed and there's a lot waiting to be discovered.
Coming from Bansko, one must turn right at ca. 2 km after the "end of Bansko" sign and leave the car. Then, follow a bicycle alley (a most ridiculous EU-funded project I must admit) and enter the wood either at the first fork or go on until the end of the bicycle alley."
