What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Bukit Shahbandar for its well-maintained trails and rewarding panoramic views, especially from the higher elevations. While the initial climb can be steep, the overall experience is considered a moderate and enjoyable hike suitable for various fitness levels. Some areas, particularly extended trails, could benefit from improved maintenance.
"Bukit Shahbandar has been one of the earliest official hiking places in Brunei
Difficulty wise, I'd say the first km or so was the hardest as there was a very steep climb but it gradually became easier and easier
During the final km of the big loop, it was practically just like a normal walk to your local grocery store
The main hiking route is very well maintained and easy to follow
However, there is an external route that we didn't go to because the vegetation has overrun the trail and we didn't want to risk it
Compared to other hiking routes, this place doesn't have any wasai (small waterfalls) but it does make up for some very breathtaking views when you reach the highest hills and you get uninterrupted views far away
Overall, if you can manage the first stretch of the hike, you can finish the overall route"

"It's still a nice park for hiking, and I have done it many times. Took the longer 3.2 km loop to Pondok 4 again. Pretty overgrown trail now and apparently not used a lot - and still not indicated on the display board map.
Overall facilities are generally good, and trail maintenance needs improvements, including Pondoks, especially after the very heavy rains."

"Was moderate (3.5/5 difficulty) level hike which took a our group of 4 about 2.5hours for our first hike here to complete the whole loop. Do note that we are not proficient level hikers and this was our first in many months.
There were many constant up and down hill. Please be mindful to not stray off the paths! Beautiful view at the top as seen in the pictures! Highly recommend a 7am hike!"

Navigating the Trails
For those seeking a longer adventure, extended trails of up to 10km are available. However, it's important to note that these longer routes, particularly the 'external route' mentioned by some visitors, can become overgrown and less defined. It's advisable to hike these with someone who has prior experience or to stick to the clearly marked main paths if you're unsure. The park's trail maintenance is generally good, but occasional improvements are needed, especially after heavy rainfall.
When planning your hike, consider the time of day. Early morning hikes, around 7 AM, are highly recommended by visitors for cooler temperatures and better visibility. This timing also allows you to enjoy the serene atmosphere before the day gets too warm. While the park doesn't have waterfalls, the reward for your effort comes in the form of stunning, unobstructed views from the highest points, making the challenging parts of the hike well worth it.
The Reward: Breathtaking Views

Whether you're an amateur photographer or a seasoned pro, the vistas from Bukit Shahbandar are sure to impress. It's recommended to bring your camera and take advantage of these prime photo opportunities.
While the park is known for its hiking trails, the visual payoff at the summit is a key reason many choose to visit. The unobstructed views are a stark contrast to the dense forest, offering a refreshing perspective and a moment of tranquility. It's this combination of physical challenge and natural beauty that makes Bukit Shahbandar a popular destination for outdoor activities in Brunei.
