History has it that in 1850, Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot was controversially selected as the major seaport. Unfortunately, the harbour had a reputation as a "ship trap", with seven ships wrecked between 1853 and 1864.

From the lookout vantage point, visitors can enjoy picturesque scenery, and be hypnotised by the sound of the rhythmicmic ruse and fall of the waves.

The wind is strong, and the waves keep rushing to the shore wash upon the sand. It is safer to walk on the boardwalk to reach the beach.

It must be one of the best tourist attraction.

Exercise extreme caution as the waves are big."

History and Heritage of Port Elliot

Port Elliot holds a significant place in South Australia's maritime history. In the mid-19th century, it was controversially chosen as the colony's major seaport. However, the natural harbor at Horseshoe Bay proved treacherous, earning it the grim moniker of a 'ship trap.' Between 1853 and 1864, seven ships met their demise in its waters, a stark reminder of the challenges faced by early maritime trade. Reddit

The Obelisk, situated on Freeman's Nob overlooking Horseshoe Bay and Rocks Bay, stands as a testament to this era. Originally serving as a flagstaff to alert ships at sea, it has weathered storms and even a lightning strike, which shattered its flagpole. Instagram This landmark offers a glimpse into the past and provides a unique perspective on the bay's historical importance and the resilience of its structures.

Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this history while enjoying the picturesque scenery. The town of Port Elliot itself retains a charming heritage feel, with beautifully updated stone cottages blending old-world charm with modern comforts, reflecting the area's enduring appeal. Instagram
