Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently impressed by the sheer scale and historical significance of Rookwood Necropolis, often describing it as a 'living museum' with stunning Victorian architecture. The peaceful atmosphere and multicultural representation are frequently highlighted as positives. However, some visitors have noted occasional unpleasant industrial odors from nearby areas, particularly at night, which can detract from the otherwise serene experience.

"This is a very interesting cemetery as the buildings are stunning. I usually find these places depressing but this place is historic and beautiful. It has a modern section and historical graves dating from the 1860s. The Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church were really lovely. The Greek church even had detailed mosaics by the entry. There was also a mosaleum built by an Irish merchant by the name of Frazer. This building has gargoyles, a dome roof and a very grand doorway with elaborate leaf and flower carvings from the 1800s."

"Located at East Street Entrance, Lidcombe, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺
I would absolutely recommend a visit to Rookwood. It’s so full of history. My group did a tour of the cemetery. We learned so much about it, from when it opened and the circumstances surrounding the start of the cemetery. As part of the tour, we watched three short videos which were very informative. Our guide, Mark Bundy, was absolutely fantastic. He was so full of knowledge and patience. Had no problem answering our questions. He took us to the site of the first Mortuary Station and the Memorial of the Holocaust. Then we went to the War Cemetery Memorial. It was wonderful to have Mark to guide us. It’s a FREE tour also which is great. I am so glad we went here. A really nice to wander through the graves and reflect on the lives of the people buried there. A HUGE Thumbs Up!!! 👍👍👍"

"I recently visited Rookwood Cemetery to pay my respects to a dear hiking buddy who passed away from natural causes. The place is vast, and once you step inside, it feels like you're in a different world. The serene atmosphere and the quiet solitude offer a profound sense of peace.

Walking through the cemetery, seeing the photos on the graves makes you reflect on the lives of these wonderful souls. It reminds me of the Quranic verse, “Every soul shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full” (Quran 3:185). This visit served as a poignant reminder of the temporality of this world and the reality of the hereafter.

Visiting often helps one remember that this world is just a fleeting illusion, and true life begins after death. We should strive to live a life worthy enough to find a place in Jannah. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Live in this world as if you are a traveler or a wayfarer.”

Rookwood Cemetery is a place where you can reflect on these truths, and I highly recommend visiting to gain a deeper appreciation of our ultimate journey."
