While the trail is rocky and can be thorny, requiring sturdy footwear and plenty of water, the breathtaking scenery and lack of crowds make it a highly rewarding experience. Some suggest a specific route for optimal sea views on descent.
"The trail is definitely on the rocky side. There are Thorn bushes everywhere along with cactuses in between, brush could be trimmed better. I would not wear flip-flops on this trail. But adventure wise it's awesome- Spectacular views. Not very many people."
Garrett R.
"A fun but roasting hike up to the Heights. We set off at 7am with 1.5l of water each which was just enough. Stout boots are a great idea. Apparently we did the route the wrong way around. Better to set off up the Jones Valley trail to Shirley Heights and come down via Carpenters Rock to enjoy the sea views better. This cactus has really pretty pink fruit"
Jason Broomer
"We tried walking down the beach to the pillars of Hercules but the tide was much too high. We took this trail instead and it was so worth it. The views from up high are gorgeous and you can see the pillars as per my pic. If it’s not too sunny then it’s an easy trail uphill. Path is not marked but easy to follow!"
