We spent some time off resort and visited Asolare Restaurant, which had insane views and even better food, Skinny Legs burger joint, Woody’s Seafood Saloon (which was owned by a recent college grad who came to visit St. John and just up and bought a bar and never left….I can’t even tell you how jealous we were of that guy), and Island Blues Seaside Bar. We enjoyed Cinnamon Bay beach and Maho Bay beach. We loved just walking around Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay, an area full of dining, galleries, shopping and more.

Just 150 feet from the ferry dock in Cruz Bay, Woody’s Seafood Saloon (340/779-4625; www.woodysseafood.com) has a happening happy hour scene from 3pm to 6pm when drinks are dirt-cheap ($1 beers) and the crowd spills out onto the street. St. John’s one and only Irish pub, the Quiet Mon, is adjacent to Woody’s and located in a West Indian cottage with walls crammed with photos, memorabilia, and shamrock-themed tchotchkes. Four large-screen TVs are on hand for your sporting-event viewing pleasure.

Woody’s might strike you as a dive bar at first glance, but don’t be fooled – this is the best place on the Island to grab lunch. I recommend grabbing a spot at one of the two tables outside for a front-row seat to the town’s action. Regarding food, the “Shark Bites” are our favorite item on the menu (we went twice in one week; they were so good)!

Please do yourself a favor while you’re in St. John, and make a stop at Woody’s to get their fantastic Shark Bites. Their buttery, Cajun spiced Bites are made out of, drumroll please, Mahi-mahi (much to the relief of sharks everywhere). Woody’s: Kenny Chesney is probably St. John’s most famous resident and this is his local drinking spot, apparently. Walkable from the ferry dock, this is a very low-key bar with some outdoor seating. But don’t come for the views (there are none); come for the vibes.
