The Canyon Lodge Eatery is Yellowstone’s answer to the rising trend of food halls, an elevated form of cafeteria where a wide variety of options are available in a single location. The recently renovated Eatery has the feel of a large-scale classic diner with a modern sensibility (teal, orange and yellow stools and couches replacing red booths and checkered floors) and, like the gourmet food halls popping up across the country, is trending more toward quality ingredients and individual preparation, rather than cafeteria-style assembly line service. You can certainly grab traditional comfort foods like soups, stews and rotisserie chicken, but the Eatery is also unveiling two new options with fresh, local ingredients in 2019.

Note, we visited in mid-September, but we found the service was quick, food was tasty (for quick serve), and the staff friendly. They had limited gluten free options, but we made it work. Our first night, we took our dinner “to go” and ate by Artist Point!

We had lunch at the Canyon Lodge Eatery, a cafeteria in Canyon Village, near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. There were a lot of options here, even vegetarian options, so definitely check it out if you visit the canyon during or around lunchtime.

The meadows around Canyon Village and along the Yellowstone River often produce bears in spring and summer. There are lots of good plants for the bears to east and plenty of pocket gophers to dig up, as well as elk calves to hunt in early summer.
