Reviews Summary

The Cheese Shop is a beloved institution in Williamsburg, renowned for its legendary, made-to-order sandwiches featuring fresh ingredients and a distinctive house dressing. Beyond sandwiches, it offers an extensive selection of cheeses, meats, wines, and unique local products, making it a destination for both lunch and gourmet shopping. While generally praised for quality and variety, some customers have noted occasional issues with staff patience during peak times and the presentation of wine tastings.

"The sandwiches were so delicious! I love that they have indoor and outdoor seating! Such a fun, cute, little shop filled with great food and great gift ideas."

Jess Ehm

"This charming and quaint sandwich shop is the perfect spot for all your cheeseboard and wine needs, nestled in the heart of colonial Williamsburg. It’s definitely worth stopping by, especially for the highly praised, freshly baked sandwiches. In terms of price, you’re getting a high-quality sandwich — you truly get what you pay for! The bread and special sauce are absolutely delicious and live up to the hype.

What impressed me most was the offering of BEEF salami, my choice of meat for the day. I can’t wait to return to try their daily special, which was a chicken salad. The beef salami and provolone on sourdough was top-notch! They also carry local VA RT. 11 chips, which was a nice touch.

A unique find was their selection of MEADE! I thought it was such a cool surprise. I grabbed the last bottle of Wildflower Meade from Saga Meadery, perfect for welcoming the spring season. They even have a great selection of Nordic Mead, which is an impressive niche. Kudos to the owners for offering this!

Highly recommend stopping by for lunch or anytime you’re in town."

Tinka Tokhi

"Honestly wish my town had something as unique as this store! If you wanted to make a dazzling charcuterie board this place has you covered in every aspect. Among the top cheeses that they recommend was Euphoria, which we purchased a bit and it was amazing. I loved that you're able to make small purchases of however much cheese you want, it allowed us to try a couple different ones."

Lunch is great as a picnic with sandwiches from the Cheese Shop in Merchants square. Chez Trinh, by Marshalls on Monticello has good Vietnamese food which isn't too exotic. I have heard that the Chinese buffet at the restaurant near Kmart on Bypass is good.

The Cheese Shop.Way more than just cheese, The Cheese Shop has made-to-order sandwiches, packaged sides (my husband had pickled brussels sprouts but there was also potato salad, macaroni salad, and a few others), potato chips, sodas and beer, a plethora of cheeses as you would expect, and even a wine shop in the cellar. This is one cool place. I loved just walking around looking at all of the unique foods for sale in the store and if I would have had more time, I would have liked to check out the wine downstairs.

We were told by everyone who’s spent time in Williamsburg that we must try the Cheese Shop for lunch and indeed, this was an excellent recommendation. They have a very simple and expert system – you choose what meat, bread, and cheese you want and whether you want that served with the tangy house homemade dressing (you do – and you also want some of the roasted tomatoes – don’t argue!) and then order. A sign over the counter tells you how long you’ll have to wait for your sandwiches.

The Cheese Shop is located in the heart of Williamsburg in Merchants Square, which is where you’ll find more modern shops and restaurants. Apart from its excellent assortment of fine cheeses and sundries, The Cheese Shop in Williamsburg is known for one thing and one thing only: incredible sandwiches. While not technically a restaurant, The Cheese Shop is one of the best places to eat in Williamsburg, by far. The secret here is the beloved “house dressing”, which adds flavor and intrigue to every bite of crispy bread and tender lunch meat.

My absolute favorite sandwich – the one I’ve been eating for thirty some years – comes from The Cheese Shop. Centrally located in bustling Colonial Williamsburg’s Merchants Square, The Cheese Shop is an institution. The store carries all manner of cheeses, salumi, gourmet foods, and wine downstairs, but the real draw is their sandwiches.
