Lunch is great as a picnic with sandwiches from the Cheese Shop in Merchants square. Chez Trinh, by Marshalls on Monticello has good Vietnamese food which isn't too exotic. I have heard that the Chinese buffet at the restaurant near Kmart on Bypass is good.

The Cheese Shop.Way more than just cheese, The Cheese Shop has made-to-order sandwiches, packaged sides (my husband had pickled brussels sprouts but there was also potato salad, macaroni salad, and a few others), potato chips, sodas and beer, a plethora of cheeses as you would expect, and even a wine shop in the cellar. This is one cool place. I loved just walking around looking at all of the unique foods for sale in the store and if I would have had more time, I would have liked to check out the wine downstairs.

We were told by everyone who’s spent time in Williamsburg that we must try the Cheese Shop for lunch and indeed, this was an excellent recommendation. They have a very simple and expert system – you choose what meat, bread, and cheese you want and whether you want that served with the tangy house homemade dressing (you do – and you also want some of the roasted tomatoes – don’t argue!) and then order. A sign over the counter tells you how long you’ll have to wait for your sandwiches.

I had asked for lunch recs on Instagram and had so many people tell me to check out The Cheese Shop in Merchant’s Square for sandwiches. It did not disappoint. Their house dressing is a thing of beauty, tangy and creamy and the perfect addition to any sandwich.

The wine area downstairs is fine, but charging me $11 for like a thimble size of turkey, one small piece of cheese, and one freaking mustard packet is mind blowing. I have celiacs so can’t have the bread, and they gave me enough to feed a mouse at full price.

I’ll be 100% honest and say I didn’t have the best experience at The Cheese Shop. My sandwich wasn’t made very well but that HAS to be a fluke. This place has a cult following and everyone loves their sandwiches so I’m sure we just hit it on a bad day.

Said to have the best sandwiches in town, with in-house baked bread. They also have a gourmet market with specialty food products and as you can guess, great cheese and great homemade bottled dressing. And good news…they are making sandwiches again!

This local staple, simply known as The Cheese Shop at 410 W Duke of Gloucester St, is a foodie couple’s dream. Swing by to sample a range of cheeses, pick up freshly baked bread and maybe grab a jar of their famous house dressing.

We ate at a 50's burger place called Retros on Prince George Street just outside the historic village. Very inexpensive, especially if you can steer away from milkshakes and are willing to share fries. Here's a menu: Retros.

If all you’re looking for is a quick bite, just head on over to Merchants Square!. They offer a wide variety of mouth-watering specialty cheeses. Be sure to sample some of the delicious soft-ripened and semi-hard varieties.

And every William & Mary student knows that sandwiches at the Cheese Shop on DOG Street, a spot famous for its house dressing, are worth a trip (some alums drive hours just to get their hands on them).

For lunch, we had arranged for a picnic lunch from The Cheese Shop and sat on the grass in the middle of the residential area to spread out our charcuterie and relax. The food was pretty fantastic.

Mary Ellen Power Rogers, one of the owners of The Cheese Shop and Fat Canary, said the additional outdoor dining area from the city has brought more local people into the downtown.
