Union Market DistrictFormerly known as Center Market, this food hall has seen a lot of change over the years. The industrial space once held 700 vendors hawking fish, meat, dairy, and other grocery staples and has since been renovated to play home to some of DC’s favorite purveyors. Nearly 50 vendors make up the businesses in and around the market, including Buffalo and Bergen, Red Apron Butcher, and District Fishwife.

Natural light pours into this unique loft through the wall of oversized windows. Located near the hip H Street and Union Market neighborhoods (and within a 10-minute drive of Union Station), this one-bedroom apartment is on the third floor of a century-old Victorian home. It's a romantic retreat for couples, thanks to a dual-sided gas fireplace that can be seen from the bedroom and the living space.

Union Market comprises a number of smaller sub-neighborhoods, including Swampoodle, a name derived as a portmanteau of swamp and puddle, used by an 1850s reporter to describe conditions in the burgeoning area. The floor-to-ceiling windows of this penthouse apartment look out over a quiet street in Northeast DC. The newly renovated condo has private everything: bedroom, living area, kitchen, bathroom, and even an entrance through a majestic garden. There’s even a fold-out couch for jealous friends.

You’re here because… no matter how good you got at trying out new recipes at home during the pandemic, you probably didn’t get your barbecue skills up to 2Fifty’s level. (And if you did… can I come over?) Seriously, though, 2Fifty has landed on top of so many top BBQ joint lists for good reason – it really is that good. The proof is in the pudding: This summer, 2Fifty inaugurated a new stall at Union, which means you no longer have to go out to Riverdale to dig in.

Walk north through Capitol Hill and into NoMa, one of the city's newly popular and trendier neighborhoods, and you’ll arrive at Union Market–an enormous building home to one of D.C.’s most creative gastronomic spaces. In order to feed the growing city population, Washington D.C. established this building before World War II and residents have used it since as a retail and wholesale location, a farmers market, and now finally as a popular food hall.

While Union Market started as Centre Market, once the largest market in Washington, DC, and opened to the public in 1871. By 1900, it was the center of a vibrant commercial life in Washington, D. C. Close to a railroad station and streetcar lines, sitting between the White House and the Capitol Building, the market was a crossroads for all of Washington, DC. After years of success, it was torn down in 1931 to make way for the National Archives.

Take time to explore Union Market where you’ll find numerous boutique shops and eateries, including many with vegan options. If you’ve got the appetite, you’re in the neighborhood of Shouk, which serves modern Israeli street food that is 100-percent plant-based. If you’ve watched the Food Network, you’ll know it as the home of the Shouk Burger that Top Chef contestant and The Chew’s co-host Carla Hall named one of her favorite meals.

For something a little more casual, Union Market is an indoor food market that has stalls from various places, ranging from local seafood to Korean tacos to Burmese desserts. There are picnic tables all around the outside of the market where you can sit and eat after you’ve grabbed some food. If you’re looking for lots of food variety in a communal atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to grab dinner and spend the evening.

Formally known as Union Terminal Market, Union Market is known as the most important part of Washington’s food infrastructure!. This neighborhood in Washington DC has a rich history and first came to life when it was a replacement market center for the Center Market in 1931. This is one of the best neighborhoods in Washington DC for eating and shopping, making it a first pick on just about any DC neighborhood guide.

When you’re out and about, we recommend checking out the following neighborhoods that help define the city: Georgetown for shopping, eating (Founding Farmers Fishers and Bakers is a family favorite) and fountain splashing on a hot day; Eastern Market on Capitol Hill for eating, strolling with kids, admiring historic row houses and checking out playgrounds; and the Union Market District to sample some very good food.

Union Market is full of unique shops, coffee shops, and food stands but the outside is remarkable. Covered in murals that change periodically you’re sure to find something to Instagram (plus you can grab an ice cream at Trickling Springs). One of the most popular sights at Union Market is the heart wall full of rainbow hearts that was created by Mr. Brainwash for International Women’s Day in 2015.

La Cosecha, a modern Latin American marketplace in the Union Market district, hosts curated seasonal events in collaboration with local embassies, tastemakers and artists. No skills necessary to sign up for their interactive classes—except for a willingness to learn!. They provide everything you need, from equipment to ingredients, and the highlight is savoring your homemade meal together.

Local favorites include FRESHFARM's market in Dupont Circle, Eastern Market and Union Market. At these bustling markets, you can pick up everything from pickles to sweet peaches to buttery pastries. Breweries and brewpubs have become a popular mainstay here, too, and a trip to the nation's capital wouldn't be complete without enjoying one of the best brunches the city has to offer.

First off, Union Market is one of my favorite spots in the District anyway, so I’d highly recommend stopping in and eating all the amazing food inside — don’t just go for the ‘gram!. On the outside of the building, they have murals that are swapped out quite frequently. These murals pictured above are no longer up, but there’s a new bright, colorful piece up in its place!

Not only is Union Market an awesome spot to spend an hour or two shopping for food and crafts, but it has romance built into the walls, or at least, one wall. Make sure to get a romantic photo in front of the market’s Heart Wall, painted by LA artist Mr. Brainwash, before leaving. This date activity serves as a perfect way to spend an afternoon exploring the fine market.

Best Food Court – Union Market is on the site of the old freight unloading yard, just northwest of Union Station (and not metro quite walking distance for little ones). Trains would unload their cargos of food from around the world and local restauranteurs would come to stock up. It remains the wholesale food center for DC, but Union Market has been converted to retail.

There’s something for everyone at Northeast DC’s Union Market: oysters at Rappahannock Oyster, tacos at Takorean, meaty sandwiches at Red Apron—even a free guided tour of the Dolcezza gelato factory next door. The market atmosphere allows kids to stretch their legs and sample different foods, and wide walkways are especially welcoming with a stroller in tow.

But you also know that bricks, industry, and Brooklyn vibes are harder to find in Washington DC when looking for engagement locations. One spot I love is Union Market and it’s surrounding areas!. Ever-changing art installs garner on the walls with art and inspiring quotes, plus at night the whole area changes to be a romantic einstein light-filled oasis.

While not quite a restaurant, Union Market features too many vegan-friendly pop-ups to overlook. Whether you’re craving tacos, pasta, ice cream, or a smoothie bowl, there’s a plant-based version available at this trendy indoor farmer’s market. So, yeah, that stereotype that all vegans are deprived and only eat kale definitely doesn’t work in Washington.

There are multiple food stands that offer food that’s best for sharing. Expect dishes like ramen, bulgogi, tacos, scrumptious seafood, and a lot more!. Since the Union Market is famous among locals, expect big crowds during the afternoon, but don’t fret since they have free parking, and the food is always worth it—your taste buds will not regret it!

The shop, located along the back wall inside Union Market, also offers grass-fed milk, pints of ice cream (non-dairy too!), and other dairy products. Snag a seat outside or on the roof of Union Market to enjoy your cone before it melts!

Next, Union Market is a fantastic spot to spend the afternoon with a date because of the variety of ethnic restaurants to choose from!. There is a ton of outdoor seating, or you can head to the rooftop to find seating up there (21+)!. Stroll the Union Market district to stumble upon other cute breweries and bookstores worth checking out.

Yes, I know, you’re surprised to see Union Market take second place. It is a fantastic food hall that represents so many different food traditions, but for those of us who get overwhelmed by lots of options (🙋🏾‍♀️) it’s not the easiest to navigate. Plus, the ordering systems and seating options could use improvement.

The DC Union market is a vibrant food place that sells a variety of cooked foods, fresh farm produces as well as fresh seafood. Several food stalls sell meat products at NoMa, seafood at The District Fishwife. At the fish market, you will get fresh fish, a poke bowl, Hawaiian fish, seaweed salad and ginger.

Union Market is a super hip and vibrant neighborhood in NE Washington DC!. It’s a neighborhood and an actual building called Union Market, which as the name suggests is a market. Union Market is set up like a food hall, housing food stalls, and shop stalls.

The Union Market is one of our favorite places in the city because there’s so much yummy food here. Buffalo & Bergen has awesome loaded sandwiches, like the Rude Socialist. It’s stuffed with bacon and maple-pecan cream cheese, and it only costs $8.50 USD!

The Rooftop at Union Market is a great spot for people-watching. This open-air bar overlooks the bustling Union Market district and offers views of some of D.C.’s most iconic landmarks, including the U.S. Capitol building and the Washington Monument.

If you are in the area, you have got to stop by Union Market. There are so many different booths selling everything from tacos to crepes to poke bowls to juice to seafood!. There is also a District Donuts here, which we had been really hoping to try!

I’m a huge fan of Union Market, but not only for the incredible vibe and vendors, but also for the photo opportunities. Make sure you walk around the back of the building and catch some of the incredible wall art!. The opportunities are endless!
