What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bar Spero garners praise for its sophisticated ambiance and exceptional service, with many highlighting the outstanding cocktail program and the fresh, flavorful seafood, particularly the grilled oysters. However, some diners note that the dishes can be overly rich and heavy, and vegetarian options are very limited. The beef rib, despite its appearance, has also received mixed reviews.
"We visited Bar Spero on a rainy happy hour evening. Atmosphere when stepping inside suits a rainy mood with soft lighting and cushy mod-plush interior.
The wait staff was attentive and Elsa, our waitress did a wonderful job with recommendations and warm attitude.
We left satisfied and happy with our choices, the grilled oysters were our highlight. Wishing the potato was more adventurous to match the rest of our orders. Hoping next time to try the crab. Unfortunately they were out early on."

"The food, cocktail and wine offering was lovely!! What really sets this restaurant apart, is the team, exceptional service and attention to details. We had a wonderful time. Kevin looked after us and he did a great job sharing his favourite takes on cocktails and dishes! We loved his recommendations! The sommelière was wonderful as well; continued to check in us throughout. From start to finish, we had the very best experience."

"Went here for a group dinner and sampled the entire menu which was lovely! Favorites included oysters and all fish/seafood dishes. I would not recommend any of the bigger meat dishes, the beef rib were honestly a disappointment for the entire table despite looking stunning. For dessert, the cheesecake ice cream and the fresh toast were a hit for everyone, don’t get the meringue cake.
Service was a bit all over the place unfortunately. Missing cues on who had sparkling water, literally forgetting that one of us was vegetarian despite three reminders - which reminds me to note that this place is not made for vegetarians! Literally bread is the only real vegetarian dish.
Would go again and pick the dishes I loved, skip the rest."

Washington DC - Best Restaurants, Bars and Things to Do in DC
Located between Union Station and Chinatown in the new Capitol Crossing development, Bar Spero is the eponymous concept from the Michelin-starred chef behind Reverie, Johnny Spero. Don’t be fooled by its billing as a bar, the restaurant serves a seafood-centric menu inspired by destinations near and far—from the Mid-Atlantic to Basque Country. Menu highlights include imported Spanish Turbot and very hammy Bar Spero Bikini—a dish with serrano ham, housemade morcilla, idiazabal and manchego cheese.
The Best Restaurants in Washington, D.C., From Laotian Cuisine to Steakhouses
If you're the type of person who is intrigued by the idea of a pine mousse and huckleberry granita, Bar Spero is right up your alley. Chef Johnny Spero's new D.C. spot features his own cerebral take on cooking, this time guided by his experience with Basque cuisine, ingredients from the Mid-Atlantic, and the kitchen's hearth fire.
Rick Eats DC Dining Guide — July 2024 Update
Bon Appetit named Bar Spero one of the country’s best new restaurants of 2023 and you won’t get any pushback from me (although BA lost me when it described Bar Spero as an “ode to Basque nightlife”). What I am sure of is that there are a lot of good things coming out of the kitchen, often seafood- and veggie-forward and cooked over an open fire. I’ve only been once but everything was a hit — the hearth-grilled bread from Manifest Bakery (with the chicken liver mousse), grilled oysters, beef tartare, the burger (which Spero originally made famous at Reverie), baked potato with smoked egg, Jonah Crab Rice, Beef Rib, and Burnt Cheesecake ice cream.
These Are the 10 Best Cocktail Bars in DC
Those who spend their weekend brunching at the neighboring eateries of Capital Crossing might not know about the metaphorical gold mine sitting around the corner. Bar Spero is relatively unassuming from the outside, but the inside space is massively modern, serving up expertly-crafted cocktails and equally as delicious bites. Oyster fans will absolutely want to snag a half dozen, which come dressed in a blink-and-you-’ll-miss-it butter sauce that sits right on top of the shell.
