Top your burger (be it ahi, veal, Kahua Ranch Wagyu beef, Hamakua mushroom, or Waipio taro) with everything from local avocados, baby greens, and chipotle goat cheese to tomato marmalade.

Located in the Parker Ranch Center, Village Burger features pasture raised beef and locallysourced ingredients.....they actually even told us where they got the very delicious and ripe tomatoes we had on our burgers. I was a bit surprised when I heard the owner is Edwin Goto; not a household name, but if you ever watched the old series Great Chefs of Hawaii, you might recognize the name.... So now it's burgers eh?

Yes they do classic Waimea beef burgers as the name suggests. But the true star of the show in our honest opinion is the excellent mushroom burger made with well known local variety Ali’i or Hamakua Mushrooms (aka King Oyster). The home made mushroom patty is as they put it “an umami bound marriage of alii, siitake and button mushrooms, cooked with sundried tomatoes, scallions and rosemary”.

Inside the tiny counter-service restaurant in Parker Ranch Center, a signpost lists how close Village Burgers is to its other ingredients’ sources, including Kekela Farms, a fixture of the Town Market. (I tried not to notice the distance to Tropical Dreams, which makes the velvety ice cream used in Village Burger shakes, since another Blue Zones key to longevity is “eat less.”)

Surprisingly, one of the best haupia pies on the Big Island comes from a burger joint. Village Burger in Waimea makes a house-made haupia smooth, creamy, and not overly sweet pie. It’s a perfect way to wrap up a meal of their famous grass-fed beef burgers.
