Named after Hawaii’s state fish, the restaurant allows diners to select their own lobster from the lagoon or choose a dish from the menu of Hawaiian and Polynesian fish and meat entrées. The food is not the only allure of this restaurant; Humuhumunukunukuapua’a offers fantastic sunset views across the ocean as diners enjoy their meals.

This Polynesian-style, thatch-roof, open-air restaurant "floats" atop a saltwater lagoon, which gives it an exotic romantic feel that's suited for special occasions. The restaurant is named for Hawaii's state fish, so it's wise to try at least one seafood dish (maybe one of the seafood towers). There's also a menu of not-to-be-missed desserts.

But the one restaurant to not miss is Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, named for the state fish, a sprawling overwater bungalow that serves elegant dinner dishes with Hawaiian and Polynesian touches and local ingredients.

Built by a Japanese multimillionaire at the pinnacle of Hawaii’s fling with fantasy megaresorts, the Grand Wailea is the grand prize in Hawaii vacation contests and the dream of many honeymooners—but it’s better suited to families and couples who like some hustle and bustle. No expense was spared during construction: Some $30 million worth of original artwork decorates the grounds, much of it created expressly for the hotel by Hawaii artists and sculptors. More than 10,000 tropical plants beautify the lobby alone, and rocks hewn from the base of Mount Fuji adorn the Japanese garden.

At the beautiful Grand Wailea, Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a is not only one of the hardest restaurants to pronounce, it’s also one of the most popular. Named after the state fish, “Humu” sits in a thatched-roof Polynesian structure afloat on its own million-gallon saltwater lagoon. Large plates include the famous Hawaiian spiny lobster dish, where you can choose your lobster from the lagoon, as well as crispy mahimahi or fresh opakapaka.

That was our first impression of the restaurant located in the luxurious Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort. We guessed how to say it correctly, which led to an in-depth conversation about what we thought a Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa was. Thankfully, our server, Harlod, could not only demonstrate the word's correct pronunciation but also took the time to show us a picture of a Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa near the bathroom.

Named for the state fish of Hawaii, Humu is located in a thatch-roofed structure on a scenic lagoon at the Grand Wailea Resort in Wailea. One of the most romantic fine dining establishments on Maui, diners even have the option to choose their own lobster from the lagoon. Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, a favorite last time, has completely changed its menu and décor although it’s still located under a thatched roof on prime lagoon space. It almost feels like you’re eating inside an upscale of version of Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean. Our seafood dinners were as fresh and tasty as if they had just been caught in the local water – because I think they were.

Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, the resort’s delightful dinner restaurant, is also about to reopen this month (December 2023) after a major refurbishment. For your one night out at dinner at the resort, this is the place to be. It sits in the middle of the resort’s famous lagoon and now, it has an all-new menu.

That night, I had a reservation at the famous Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa restaurant, an elevated bungalow-style steak and seafood restaurant. I sat at their newly renovated aquarium bar top, which is exactly what it sounds like. You could look down and see fish swimming underneath your dinner and cocktails.

Named after Hawaii’s state fish, Humuhumunukunukuapuaa is a beachfront restaurant situated in South Maui. This indoor-outdoor restaurant offers stellar views, attentive service, mouthwatering food, and some quirky decor. The circular bar incorporates a glass aquarium, adding to the beachy vibe.

Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa’ – or Humu Humu as it is known in The Grand Wailea is the award winning restaurant in Wailea Maui. Originally designed by Island Design Center of Maui, Humu Humu debuted with a splash. Since then the bar has been upgraded with an aquarium in the bar top.

The star of the show at the Grand Wailea, Humu was closed until a few weeks before we visited. Reservations are available on OpenTable and are recommended. If you’re looking for higher quality foods and dining at this resort, forget everything else at the hotel and come here.

This was our favorite place to get a drink a fancy cocktail in the bar and watch the sunset. Humuhumnukunukuapua’a means triggerfish with a snout like a pig (it’s a reef triggerfish). Make reservations ahead of time for dinner here, the menu is fantastic!

When visiting this gorgeous area of Maui, we highly recommend enjoying a stunning sunset at beaches like Keawakapu, Polo, Wailea, Ulua and Mokapu, as well as dining at Monkeypod Kitchen, Capische, Ferraro’s and Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.

On the South end of Maui (Wailea), the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa Restaurant is very popular. It's in the Grand Wailea Resort (you'll probably spot some Hollywood celebs dining there, too).

It is a signature seafood restaurant that uses fresh local ingredients. Humuhumunukunukuapua’a is only open for dinner. Your table will overlook the lagoon near the beach.
