What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Antonio's The Taste of Mexico is lauded for its authentic Mexican cuisine with a Veracruz twist, featuring elevated dishes and a signature Chile Relleno en Nogada. Diners rave about the friendly service and unique margarita selection. However, some find the prices to be on the higher side for certain dishes, and the small space can lead to waits during peak hours.
"No problems here. All was great. Go EARLY if you don't want to wait. It's very small inside. We got there at 430 as 2nd group in the room, by 6 pm there was a line outside---and server said it was a SLOW day.
Great selection of margaritas, including a green chili one--very different! We split the halibut tacos and chili rellenos, both very good. No free chips here, but their salsa ( w chips) was so good we bought a bottle of it!"

"We had the chile relleno en nogada and pozole. Overall food was good but not stand out (to me). Service was amazing.
It was my first time having chile relleno en nogada, so I can't properly rate it... but it was quite good. It was a heavy meal and I'd only recommend it if you appreciate meat with fruit and cinammony flavors, because that's what this dish mostly is. Sherry cream sauce was flavorful and the pomegranate seeds gave nice balance to everything. I liked it, but would not seek it out. But again, I am generally unfamiliar with this dish.
Pozole was a huge portion and nice and warming.
Waiter gave me lots of spicy sauce to add to my meal. He was lovely to all guests in the restaurant and had a lot of heart."

"Really great food! Very high quality food and presentation. The salsa served with our meal was delicious! Ended up buying some hot sauce as well. Try the coffee!"

The Five Best Chile Hotspots in Taos
Chef Antonio Matus is a Taos institution; he’s been delighting locals and visitors for years with his inspired Mexican and northern New Mexican cuisine, assuring him a spot among the five best chile hotspots in Taos. His latest endeavor is unassuming from the outside, located in the parking lot of the south side Rio Grande Ace Hardware. But once you step inside, the aromas of carne asada and chicken enchiladas with green chile and mango will transport you to a magical (and very delicious) place.
Taos Restaurant Recommendations: Where to Find the Best New Mexican Food & MORE
Antonio’s: Antonio’s came highly recommended by many people as the best place for Mexican food in Taos, but we didn’t realize until after we were there that it’s traditional Mexican style (not New Mexican or Tex Mex) so it wasn’t exactly what we were expecting. Also I think we caught them at a bad time (they’re struggling to find enough people to work just like everyone else). What I learned here is that I’m not familiar enough with traditional Mexican food to know what’s best to order.

Then there’s Antonio’s The Taste of Mexico, serving authentic enchiladas and sopapillas in a cozy, colorful setting. Up next: Gutiz, a Latin-French fusion gem where breakfast and lunch get kicked up a notch with dishes like coconut French toast and spicy paella. And for something totally unexpected, Donabe Asian Kitchen brings bold Japanese and Asian fusion flavors to the Southwest, proving that Flavortown knows no borders.
Antonio's: A Taste of Mexico - Taos, New Mexico
If corridos have sequels and characters in folk songs bear offspring, Maria Chuchena’s progeny might well be Antonio Matus, chef and owner of the eponymous Antonio’s: A Taste of Mexico in Taos, New Mexico. Like the corrido, Antonio is from Veracruz and like Maria Chuchena, the kitchen is his world. It is where he has been filling Taos with utterly unforgettable surprises for more than a decade.
The Sweet Life in Taos
If you are downtown, don’t miss Antonio’s—A Taste of Mexico, the recipient of several Best of Taos awards, First Place for Red Chile and many more recognition. This five-star restaurant is located on Guadalupe Plaza and serves authentic Mexican food, with a Veracruz twist. Food is plenty and delicious but at Antonio’s there is always room for dessert, said manager Benina Roybal.

Antonio’s The Taste of Mexico is known for its huge portions, friendly and professional service, and its signature dish: Chile Relleno en Nogada, a Poblano pepper stuffed with seasoned ground beef, apple, pear, raisins, tomato, onion, and spices, and topped with a pecan brandy cream sauce, pomegranate, and cotija cheese.

Where To Eat, Sleep, Drink, And Explore In Taos & Santa Fe, New Mexico
In Taos, I always stop at World Cup Cafe for a cappuccino and Antonios for lunch or dinner. The Chile Relleno en Nogada is seasoned with pear, walnut brandy, and raisins and is famous through the state. My favorite breakfast burrito on earth comes from Bode’s General Store in Abiquiu.

Antonios– Antonio’s “taste of Mexico” also is influenced by his many years traveling and perfecting the culinary arts, from the Bahamas to Austen, Texas. Antonio Matus bridges the gap between traditional Mexican cuisine and exemplary internationally renowned culinary arts.

Maybe it just seemed that way since the patio was closed, but the place was packed—and it was a Tuesday night!. We started with drinks (of course). The Husband ordered a margarita ($7.50) and was really disappointed.
